Does anybody remember where the thread is on underwater bubble ring blowing? It looked pretty fun, but I've never tried it, and I can't find it for some reason.

(Hi Paula!)

greenpirate69:
try pumpkin carving under water. see who can make the best carving, in the
best time.

Our dive club has an underwater pumpkin carving contest every fall right before Halloween. It's lots of fun, watching everyone try and get that pumpkin down to the platform. We always have a large turnout and some pretty good carved pumpkins come from the depths. Oh yeah and the fish love it also!

We have a laminated Monopoly game. We play for charity every fall. You play for an hour at a time, when its your turn, you just go down and tap someone out, then take over with what they had. One year I spent the whole hour and never passed "Go". Kept winding up in jail! Anyway its lots of fun.

It was post #24. I wasn't sure how to send it to you , so I copied and pasted:

I like to blow bubble rings at the safety stop/deco stop. Basically you get dead neutral in the water, roll on your back, get a normal (not big, you'll start to rise) breath and take your reg out.

Then, stick your tongue out (no pucker face needed) and as you pull it back in, blow out a short but fast burst of air. It should make a 'thpp' sound when you do it on land. With a little practice you're a pro.

Just remember that moving air in and out is what flushes out the nitrogen, so don't do this the whole safety stop

Suggestion for activities while diving in a quarry? I've got a few. They are, in order of priority: Pratice skills, pratice skills, pratice skills -- ohh, and if there's time left, pratice skills :) Bouyancy, trim, all sorts of OW-class skills except this time around midwater rather than on the bottom......then midwater with eyes closed (and a buddy's watchfull eyes on you) etc. until everything is second nature. Then move on to the beyond-OW skills (valve shutdowns, air-sharing exercises and so on). Ohh, and if there's time and gas left, a good hide-and-seek is always a hit in a close-to-zero-vis mudhole.

My point is: diving in a quarry isn't for the scenery. It's for training such that everything is second-nature for the dives where there's actually something to see and do..
Speaking of underwater games, though.......anyone got any ideas for mid-water games to pass time while doing deco? Tic-tac-toe is booring after, ohh, 30 sec, and we tried magnetic chess but a current ate a pile of our chess-pieces....

You can take an underwater FM radio with you.

I have heard of, but never tried, a hand held game. They make many different games, poker is common. Put one in a ziplock bag and take it down with you. Also thought about using a vaccum sealer but you would have to put something inside to keep the sealer from pushing all the buttons down. Not sure if any of this works.

I can only assume the toy we had in my ow class was what you're talking about...it was fun. Have you seen one for sale?
They used to sell the solid rubber "toypedo" at Modells ,a discount sporting goods store . I bought one there years ago and traded it to a guy from Turkey's Underwater Rugby team during the UWRugby Worlds in June 2003 . The next one I got from the Annapolis dive shop behind the Annapolis mall for a few dollars more . They had to order it. Also it is available from Sea Colony Dive Shop, about6 miles north in Severna Park . They sell for about $20-$25 .They are about a foot long and can be thrown over 20 feet underwater.
You can throw it yourself and try to chase it and catch up to it before it hits the bottom, but you have to be fast to do that .

I have seen these available at the local Wal-Marts stores during the spring and summer months. They were in the isles with Pool Supplies.
They were around $10.00. My Brother in Law and I play Underwater Tag, or Dodge Ball with one. In shallow water, this toy even helped us teach my Two-Nephews and a Niece how to swim. After they saw the fun we were having with it, they forgot their fears of the water since they wanted to play with the Toypedo so badly. Next thing we knew, we had three kids in the water with us. All of them under 10 years old.

I did underwater fishing for several years in the Black Sea... is fun and you get to choose only the size of fish you want.

:Please note I have never tried any of these things:

- has anyone ever tried underwater fishing?
- If you are willing, laminate a deck of cards and play a game of cards at the bottom with your buddy!

I'll try and think of more later./
