You've had better luck with zip ties than I have

Tried Thomas & Betts cable ties? Lot better than Lowes/HD/Ace - stronger, stainless lock tab.

Work good, last a long time for me.

BEST way to learn the use of a compass is to go in the woods on dry land... Move through the woods going point to point and leave a marker... Then put the compass in your pocket and walk off.. After a few minutes, Take the compass out and find your way back to one of the points... Then take a heading to one of the other points.. After you feel good about your ability to find points using the compass... Go do it underwater... It's Fast and fun way to learn navigation...

Finding your way around little navigation courses (on dry ground) for fun is a popular hobby here in Finland. Over the years I've noticed that mere kids with this hobby are amazingly good at navigating underwater even when they have only just learned to dive.

Lesson learned: you can practise on dry land too and as always, practise makes all the difference (more is better).
So even if it's just in a large field, try making some navigation course and practice finding your way around by compass. Underwater is teriffic, but above the surface is also good experience.

Keep an eye out in used book stores and ebay, as you might find a specialty manual for Nav, or other subjects. The age doesn't matter if you are not taking a class as the information has not changed much, if at all. Just because you did not take the course does not mean you can't have the information.
