Is this a snide remark about buddy separation distance? Do you never see a case where buddy separation greater than arms length might be useful?
Not trying to be snide, sorry if that seemed abrupt.
What I mean is that the further you get from your buddy the more often you need to make visual contact, and more prepared you need to be to react if needed.
There is a line where chasing bugs/crabs/shrimp whatever, the buddies have to decide whether it's a buddy or a solo dive. If you've agreed to use the buddy system then you need to be vigilante to the expectations/duties of a buddy.
If not, then go catch bugs and meet back at X time.
Either way, communication above water during planning would clarify much.
