Does anyone know anything about the "sport" sonic navigation system. I know Diver's Supply quit carrying the model they once did, so it must not be very good. I have had responses that the "scout" was not satisfactory, so now I just need a report on the "Sport".

thanks and dive safely!

Locators are a useful tool. There are times when a compass is not worth having when underwater. It's just another tool in the aresenal, and there's nothing wrong with using one.

hi jamsharky ihad a scout boat locator for about 4 years& it worked perfectly never failed all the time i had it. i sold it & am going to buy the sport when they have more stock [early may] i know a guy who has had the sport for 5 years & never had a problem with it he always dives with it [swears by it].the reason i want the sport is because it is easier to read & more accurate.if you like you can email me at sandrap@iinet.net.au for more info

Hello, I have had a lot of these things. And Things get different in deep water. The compass is great in shallow waters. In the abyss coming up from say 135 where you cant see the surface or the bottom and you are still going up' you need to know what direction to swim towards the boat. I have one for sale. It;s small hand held. Military ?? check out Underwater Products for Divers and Subsea Vehicles | RJE International

So in 16 years......is there new technology that can be trusted? Even though I actually pride myself on my analog compass navigation skills......I would definitely buy a locator beacon system that would reliably get me back to my anchor. I am basically talking PNW Solo hunting where 10ft is considered decent vis. Easy to miss an anchor line in 10ft or less vis......... On a side note, I currently use a 1300 lmn LED strobe about 20ft from bottom on my anchor line and that has helped me on several occasions.

Anyone know how good those handheld sonar units for finding I assume big objects?
Or does a fishfinder turned sideways work similar

Scubadog, thanks for the heads up. Looking for the anchor line in bad vis is a big deal. You can float a long way doing a much needed 5 min safety stop at 20/15 ft. Before I go down I set my compass to the boats heading. Saved me from doing a long swim many times. Even with state of the art equipment if the boat is behind you in a strong current or straight above your head as you ascend it's best to check your compass and be swimming in that direction. Try to keep in mind the last 500 or so dives were all deeper than 100 ft. We were all lone hunters and all alone. Nobody can hear you scream at 135 ft / be cool and stick to the rules.
