A stainless steel cam band buckle can make a remarkable sound. Leave it a little sideways when it's cammed over so the edge of the buckle rests on the double layer of cam band instead of the tank. Later on the dive when that edge slides off the nylon and snaps against the tank you will definitely hear it.

I had one burst and it was a pretty loud sound. Similar to an explosive diver recall device.

The environmentally sealed 1st stages are still sealed, so not that. Good thought though.

Have you ruled out a commercial vessel? The first time a lake freighter/bulk carrier went directly over me while diving in the St Lawrence River I figured my time was up. The sound envelopes you and you have no idea where it is coming from.

Diving Edmonds UW park you are adjacent to the ferry dock. When the car ferry comes you feel the thrum of the engines and the props in your soul - you'd swear it was 10' overhead even though there is a sunken dry dock barrier between you and the ferry.

Very disconcerting. But nothing like MB described.
