Actually I like the air powered noise makers... the Hammerhead... but if you get one... please - very short honk when you see something really cool you've got to show me. Not HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNKKKK!!!! because you spotted the oh so elusive parrot fish.

NOOOOOOO! This brings back nightmares of a couple on a dive trip who constantly honked those things!

How do I talk through my reg? I just....talk! Some sounds can't be pronounced with something between your teeth. Stick your finger between your teeth and talk and you'll see what I mean. Even so, no one has any trouble understanding me. On the other hand, I find very need to talk underwater...hand signals work well enough.

My DM would hit his open palm with the "meat" of his fist... it made a pretty distinctive noise underwater.

or you can snap your fiungers if you have no gloves on but all that goes away when you are in cold water.

Underwater I use a basic old fashion $6.95 tank banger.....but use it very sparringly

Noise makers are not always for getting your buddy's attention. They are usually used to get someone else's attention.

Thanks for saying this. Every time I see a discussion about the various types of noisemakers, there is a select group that has to focus on how totally unnecessary noisemakers are (or should be) in their opinion. Just because THEY are PERFECT divers with PERFECT buddies doesn't make anyone with a "tank banger" a criminal or an incompetent diver. (can you tell this is a source of annoyance to me?)

Some of us recognize that ocassionally a diver might want to get the attention of someone other than their buddy!

I have never needed a noisemaker to get the attention of my buddy, but I have signalled to a group to point out a few creatures etc. There are other reasons also, none of which should justify any sort of crucifiction.

That being said, overuse of noisemakers can be an even bigger pain, but the people in here all know better. It is the non-Scubaboard divers that are the "problem".

Does it rattle when you don't want it to?

No it really doesn't. It does jingle a bit when I am walking to the water though.

The Warhammer Maneuver will certainly get attention!

The WM will certainly get attention!
Yes, but it kills visibility and some kinds of attention are not allows what we want. Also it might cause a spate of people testing barfing through their regs.
