Underwater Attention Getters

I do two things -

1) is to talk, hum, and sing stupid songs through my regulator. My normal dive buds can tell you about this

2) When that doesn't work, my usual visit to Taco Bell on my way to dive site usually kicks in and next thing you know I'm signaling with bass tones

I tell my dive buddies if they hear an owl underwater, that it's me. A nice loud "hoot hoot hoot" seems to carry quite a ways. Dive buddies have claimed that its due to a resonance in that big hollow spot where most other people have a brain :banana:


Rapping a boltsnap rapping on the tank also works pretty good, even better if I avoid banging the tank with the camera, light, or whatever else is attached to the boltsnap.

i use a good quality CARABINER (large size), and i just need to click on the gate and this is sufficient to get their attention.

otherwise i use the carab as tank banger (but this is seldomly used as such)

above water i use the carabiner to lock my mask, fins to a D-ring on my BCD.

Gee... some good ideas here. When I want to get someones attention... I just turn off their air. That seems to do it. Maybe that's why no one will dive with me anymore!?

Actually I like the air powered noise makers... the Hammerhead... but if you get one... please - very short honk when you see something really cool you've got to show me. Not HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNKKKK!!!! because you spotted the oh so elusive parrot fish.

Noise makers are not always for getting your buddy's attention. They are usually used to get someone else's attention.

I close my right hand, leaving a small "funnel shaped opening", smakc that sharply with the palm of the left hand. In quiet water like a pool, it can be heard easily over the whole lenght. In open water it works pretty well also. 2 weeks ago in Curacao I used it to get the attention of a diver (not my buddy, she was with me) who had a camera. He and his buddy were at least 60-70 ft away. It caught there attention immediatly, but it was funny to watch them, as they kept looking at each other like "Where is that coming from?????". Really cheap, no tendancy to overabuse and doesn't sound off accidently.

Oh, and the reason to get the guy with the cameras attention was for him to get the chance to take a picture of the same octopus that I have in my avitar.....

My DM would hit his open palm with the "meat" of his fist... it made a pretty distinctive noise underwater.

It takes 30sec of practice, but it works well. Take the fist of one hand and hit it on the palm of the other. Sometimes if i cant get my buddy's attention, i rap my dive tables on my tank, that also works... I dont take anything down that doesnt have a 2nd prurpose.

I picked on of these at DEMA last month, and I have been happy with it so far. It works really good to get my students attention.

I read about this H2YO in the monthly newsletter from ReefSeekers in BeverlyHills...they apparently stock it. Haven't seen it at any of the LDSs in the South Bay. Have you heard from someone who tried it and liked it??
I'm curious too, having just discarded the plastic ball on the latex tubing that I gave up using because it didn't work.
H2YO looks promising.

Haven't seen it in any stores around SoCal. I found it when I was looking up info on the Sensus Pro (same company).

Group dives every Wednesday night @ Veterans Park, 7pm. Usually 8-20 divers.
