What do you wear UNDER wet suit. I saw the similar thread in womens only forum (how come there is no "men only" ? :) )

I have this problem:
I usually wear just standard "open water" ??? shorts (aka swimming shorts). But they annoy the hell out of me when i try to put my wetsuit on, no matter what i will do i end up with material being clumped up and making hills in wierd places... not even mentioning that after two dives the waitsband+wetsuit = sore skin.

I was looking for some better alternatives.. speedos work nice but there is no way i will show up publicly on a charter boat wearing them :D Some places also sell "diving shorts" - tight shorts that look like the ones used for biking.. i tried them once in a store but: $40 for shorts ???.. and they have similar problems as speedos :)

The other thing is that when i dive with no wetsuit (Keys) and use rash guard (looks like a tight t-shirt) the combination of tight top and loose shorts looks plain ridiculous (i don't have a picture of that to show to prove my point)

So... any advices ?

The above question came to me while looking at DAN web site and finding this:

Called "the best open-water short on the market, "

maybe DAN logo has some special powers that makes things with it work better ? :)

but I just have to wear those skin tight "skin shorts" that go from just above the knee to my stomach. It's not a fashion statement that I am after.

I go, ahem, "commando". Just like you said, swim trunks suck and speedos just look ridiculous. Those tight "skin shorts" don't look much better, and I also balk at the $40 price tag.

My method does require a little extra care when getting in and out of a wetsuit, but it's worth the comfort it affords. A towel and a "swim change" usually suffice for the change. On a big enough charter, there's generally a head.

Of course, I wouldn't be doing this in a rental...

Hehe....ask Jepuskar about that one. That suggestion made for an "enlightening" afternoon. Too bad it was deleted :D.

I've got a new pair of speedos I want to try out.....ok, not the kind of speedos you're thinking of.....shame on you! It's a speedo bathing suit that's a little more lightweight than others I've used.

As for the free-balling, I'll save that for a rental!

Works for me, too.
By the way, I'm surprised that folks here are so concerned with how they look on a dive trip. I choose my equipment (including suits) based on utility and comfort. There's allways someone on the boat goofier looking than you! :goofy:

Let's face facts here. A wetsuit does not hide any figure flaws, so what is the difference if you wear spandex thigh length shorts? I prefer runner style and get them from Road Runner Sports. They are available via internet or catalog and I use their name brand. I also get all my shoes thru them they are good people.

By the way I am also "fat as a pig" as Pete and I are probably the same size. Just don't visit Brazil's beaches as everyone wears a speedo or bikini no matter what SIZE you are or you are laughed off the beach in shorts and reg. swimsuit.

wear and be comfortable

err.. i don't really care what i have on the actual boat.. since once i get into my farmer john wetsuit i ani't goint out of it till the boat gets home (1. putting wet wetsuit on is .. err.. chilling experience, 2. getting it off is a major excersise)

but then i gotta go in whose swim shorts/speedos/skintight shorts to a gas station, fastfood place/wherever

just trying to find the best balance between form and function here (ie, don't have to change before dive but yet be able to walk around on dry land after a dive :-)

.. maybe that is just a dream :)

on the boat i wear swim shorts. when it comes to getting into my wetsuit i reveal the speedos i wear under the shorts. if you're quick and point out the breaching humpback whales on the starboard side only few will notice. when i am done with the diving i take the wetsuit off and pull my shorts back over the speedos. voila.

Hi FallenMatt,

I prefer the tight swim shorts, as opposed to the "Speedo" type, for under the wetsuit. Although I live in NJ, as a "warm water weenie", the vast majority of my dives are "away". So as to not "offend/ gross out" depending on the circumstances, I will :(as the others have said):
a) wear another, looser, bathing suit /shorts over the tight shorts until it is time to suit up. (Especially for hotel "van pickups")
b) keep the wetsuit on between dives (unzipped, and rolled down to the waist), with a t-shirt added*
c) wear a baggy, longish t-shirt -it covers a multitude of sins.:)

* As you said, on the boat with other divers, things can be more relaxed, because everybody probably "gets it".

Good luck,
Mike
