I've been working on a long-term photogrammetry project to build a complete and detailed model of the UB-88 German WW 1 submarine that is 190 feet deep about 9 miles off the coast of San Pedro, California.

The current model now covers the entire front section of the wreck and has 1500+ photos. I probably need 3-4 more dives to complete the entire model.

Most recent blog post on the project is here:

A link to the free sketchfab model is here:

Very cool. Will your model include the nets or can you get clear shots of the stern?

Good question.

On Dive #4, I attempted to start to build the stern section with the rear torpedo tube and the nets and it didn't go so well. The nets are "semi-transparent" and moving so it makes aligning them in the photogrammetry software near impossible (I think).

My plan right now is to first add the hull & deck sections behind the conning tower on the next dive (or two) and then go to work again on the stern. I'm pretty sure I can figure out a way to get the rear torpedo tube but I'm not so optimistic about being able to include the net in the model.

Here is my post on dive #4 which details the challenges on the stern:

Just posted about progress on the stern section. The last part of the project will be the stern torpedo tube and maybe the nets. Still not sure those will be possible but I will likely try.
