My southern Spanish instructor went out of his way to make sure that I only not learned the thereabouts of self reliant but also, constructively, pointed out common areas for improvement.

I completed my self reliant lesson by second dive.
I dived my third dive today as a self reliant diver.

In one word:

Liberating

PADI , not my preference but does the job.
Was fortunate with an instructor who took the job seriously.
Continuously paying attention to minute detail.
