U-Boats in the Gulf
Monday, March 21 @ 10pm ET/PT

In Summer 1942, with the U.S. at war in Europe and the Pacific, few Americans knew that the war raged in their own backyard. Dozens of Hitler's U-boats had penetrated the Gulf of Mexico, sinking merchant vessels and oil tankers. Of all the U-boats that attacked the Gulf, only one rests at the bottom of the sea--the U-166. Experience the excitement of the first thorough investigation into the wreckage since discovery in 2001 and learn of the technological advances that made its identification possible.

saw the episode last night...caught it by accident really, and couldn't believe it...damn thing sits in only 60 feet of water...anyone here ever dive it????

ScubaCollin:
We dont get that channel in Canada :(

I've heard that it comes on the Discovery Channel in Canada under a different name, like underwater detectives or something else. Don't know for sure though.

By the way, according to this, http://www.headlines.com.au/worldnews/2001/june/001.html
The sub(u-166) sits in 5,000 feet of water, not 60 feet.
disclaimer: I haven't watched last nights episode yet so not sure where you got 60 feet but the sub that they had in the program description was the U-166, which is much much deeper. Maybe they dove another sub in 60 feet so they could "get the feel" for the TV viewers.

I only caught part of the show but my understanding was it was 'thought' to be in 60' of water but was actually discovered in 5000'.

Just a slight difference in required decompression time :-)

For some reason though I did think there was a somewhat diveable (in 100-200 feet) uboat in the gulf. I know there are couple off the coast of new jersey and a couple off the coast of North Carolina.

( I will prob watch the show tonight on TIVO.)

I've seen the show a couple of months ago. It was interesting how they figured out that a merchant ship with a huge load of lumber was the target of a U-Boat. I never knew that made it that far in. Sixty miles off the coast of Fla? I don't recall the particulars but definitely worth the watch!

We have the U853 off the coast of Rhode Island as well.

For those who don't have this site: http://uboat.net/maps/us_east_coast.htm

This is the definitive resource for U-boat information on the web. The link I posted above takes you to a map of the U-boats known to have been sunk off the US coast.
