Why isn't there more excitement over the U-701 off NC. I understand it is now being dived even though it is really sanded in. Any info on it, can it be entered etc.? Seems like a good potential for artifacts. Am I missing something here or is it a waste of time. Any thoughts? :eyebrow:

There was a good article about the sub in one of the local 'free' newspapers in Hatteras. Let me know if you want a copy and I can try to scan it in as a .PDF

It looks like the wreck will be protected to keep people from removing artifacts though. It sounds like this was done in order to promote diving on the wreck even though it's in a high current area...

I would love a copy. Could you get me one?I could give you my email if you could send me a copy.
Thanks,
G

Yep, in the article it mentioned that Capt John was taking divers out to it. I have a scanner that can do 11X17 sheets at work, so I'll bring it in tomorrow. Actually, It's not a bad idea to archive it before Wifey throws it out. I'll post the address when I get it uploaded to my server.

They have been trying to get to the 701.
but it is a heck of a wreck to try to hook too. I know of a few trips that Outer Banks has gone up and couldn't get hooked.

They are trying to get it protected because the 701 is the last nontechnical diveable Uboat that hasn't been stripped of most of its artifacts.(besides the 501 in Chicago).

Hooked up like snaged by the anchor/grapel while everyone is on the surface, or hooked up like someone rides the anchor down and ties in? I can imagine problems with both in current and if the wreck is sanded in.

Just curious.
