I'd add to Hoosier that TDI adv. nitrox/deco procedures class requires a whopping 25 logged dives last I checked, so how skilled do you expect the guy with 25 dives to be? Besides, there's very little to learn in terms of dive planning (if you use deco program), so they might as well spend the time practicing the fundamentals. Also, I don't think alternative kick styles are necessary or required for basic, non-overhead environment deco diving, though they don't hurt.

Maybe there are no instructors nearby? I don't know his situation, but that's stopping me from taking it right now.

Since I know that you go to Albuquerque from time to time anyways, you should take the DIR-F class with Mark Redmond in January. :)

That is the minimum skills needed by the TDI standards. My TDI instructor wanted me to have a minimum of rescue certification, wanted to dive with me and get to know me before he offered to teach the courses for me. My instructor made me do all the dive planning by hand. I had to write out everything from the max depth/bottom time/deco schedule/o2 exposure/gas usage/max ppo2/ppn2/ascent rate/run time/etc. My dive plans for the class were very detailed and were almost always dead on. Gas usage and run time varied some depending on the dive, but he didn't allow me to whip out v-planner to plan my dives.

I'm sure that there are TDI instructors that would consider that skill level acceptable.

That would really hurt if it wasn't so true :) LOL

That's all fine and dandy, but could you do it effectively on a heaving boat, when the dive site just got changed, with no paper, pens and a calculator.

Basically what I am asking here is, how real-world effective is it to you?

We watch this same thing play out quite hilariously on boats all the time.....

Damn, the 160ft dive just got changed to another site at 140ft.......the mad dash for the palm pilots begins..........roflmao.

I will not mention Ratio Deco....I will not mention Ratio Deco.

They would probably try to change their backgas too ;)

The good news is if we put our efforts together, we'll bring them kicking and screaming into the 1990's by 2010. :rofl3:

Minus the three stooges of course.
