Likely certified cave divers then.

There doesn't seem to be any reports on their qualifications. Some news stories said they had three "oxygen" tanks each.

You can traverse from Gran Cenote to Calimba. It’s entirely possible this is what they were doing.

Non-cave trained divers require a guide at most cenotes. The guide must be full cave, at minimum a certified DM, and must be in full cave gear.

Those stipulations don’t apply to certified cave divers, although some cenotes require a guide regardless of certification.

aren't most cenote dives led by dive masters? I am new and curious. It seems dangerous to let tourists in to just go exploring if there are mazes. How to the guidelines work? I wanted to dive the cenotes near Cancun but not at a high risk like this.
You as a non cave trained diver can get a dive shop and guide and dive a cenote as a Cavern tour. You will be in an overhead environment but you should have areas where light in shinning in and therefore exits available to you should you feel uncomfortable enough to want to get out. Most popular is Dos Ojos. To be clear as a cave diver we dive in much different conditions. All overhead and very well trained. It is NOT a place for an untrained diver to be. Enjoy your Cavern tour and if diving in that environment is something your interested in then come back to this site - create a posting asking questions about what’s next and who should you talk to.

They were diving from Centre Kaliba and were not treversing to Grand cenote. Both of them were highly qualified cave divers and have been for many years. About the three tanks, yes they were carrying one stage each on the dive. They did most likely not get lost but we will have to await the investigation report later.

And thanks for the information.

“An investigation has begun against the owners and into the deaths of the divers who, Salvador Arguea says, were found 1,200 meters from the entrance. He added that there will be severe punishment against those who operate illegally and violate the Regulation of Cenotes and Caverns laws.”

That’s quite far into the Cenote, with how many tanks?

Civil Protection head, Lucio Salvador Arguea, explained that the owner of the cenote, Armando García Hernández, does not have the permits or the security conditions for his operation which resulted in fatal consequences.

As if any permit could have helped. And without knowing hardly any details.. it’s hard to imagine how “security conditions” cold have helped, other than to just lock down the entire site.

...very sad indeed.
