Hi All,

Recently I've been considering swapping my knighthawk for a bp/w. I've been doing a TON of reading and am glad there is so much great info on the site.
Anyway, on my knighthawk, I have a shoulder dump, a rear dump, and my air2 has an optional pull dump. Basically in any position (horizontal or vertical) I can dump air. However, all the wings (single tank) I have seen only have a bottom dump. Is there a functional reason for this? Also, are there any wings that have a top and bottom dump? Thanks for your help.

Victor

My wings have two ways to dump air -- through the inflator, and from the rear dump. I've never felt the need of any more.

With one dump means high and another low, you can basically dump gas from any position. The Scubapro setup with a dump capability on each shoulder really allows for the less complicated operation of an Air2 in an OOA situation. The pull dump rather than the std elbow on the left shoulder just give you another option on how to operate it at the cost of a bit more complex a mechanism.

I think, when you boil it all down, a capability to dump gas from your BC in any normal position that you can operate comfortably is what you need. For most divers, a 2-holer will do the job nicely.

BTW, many wings use a standard left shoulder connection that will accept either a simple elbow or a pull dump connection. I thought I needed the pull dump but found out I was wrong. It might take you a couple dives to get used to it.

Most wings assumes a horizontal diver, so have just two ways to dump: From the rear by sticking your butt up just a little and pulling the dump string, or by giving the short inflater hose an easy twist upward with your wrist and dumping. No other dumps are necessary and so are considered failure points.

That said, the new Apex wing has the option of a second dump on the right rear. and some of the OMS wings come with all kinds of shoulder dumps and stuff.

My personal opinion is that extra dumps are a perfect example of manufactures charging you for extra stuff you never needed in the first place. But some people seem to like 'em.

You mean like the BC's that come with 30 or 40 d-rings? And they still usually don't manage to get of them in a spot that's useful. LOL

Well since the D rings are sewed in and you can't adjust 'em, I guess you'd have a bunch of them all over the place, don't ya think?

;)

Been thinking about it some more. I guess it would be redundant to have so many areas that air can leave the BC. Thanks for your thoughts/input.

I too have a bp/w with only 2 way's of dumping air. That is all I need. Whether diving in a dry suit or wet suit, I've never ran across a time when I wished I had another dump valve.

Some people would say additional dump valves are potential problem points.
