Not really connected but I really, really wish I could find a decent wing with a top right shoulder dump. I hate fighting through stages and going ass up to dump... air.

OK, of course the DIR RHS is reserved for emergencies (and scootering — ooh, I’ve got a Tesla), but if you’ve a standalone torch on a soft handle/bungee on your left hand (that is hard to swap hands due to bungees), you simultaneously blind the person behind you, plunge yourself in darkness and do a massive sweeping sight manoeuvre that may startle your team member in front.

My wing can have the dump on the left or right side, but that isn't common now, and might not have been an option at all in the early DIR days.
 
It mostly evolved from the DIR culture. Whilst DIR is taken to cult status by some, most consider DIR to have some useful guidelines.

The basic DIR twinset configuration is generally considered as sound and a very good starting point.

Once you start extending your diving to multiple stage cylinders it is very frequently modified from DIR dogma: different D-rings, mounting stages on the right hand side, more D-rings (two D-rings per side for stage clipping), harness breaks, sidemount bungees, etc. However, the core hose routing and dump placements would normally remain the same.

Bottom line: stick with the basic DIR config until you’ve more experience and then add tweaks.


The standard DIR rig took guys to 10,000’ at 270’ avg depth on open circuit.

You don’t need more d rings for multi stage dives.

It’s intentional. In the early days, halcyon was making wings specifically born out of the requirements of the WKPP dives. Left side makes sense for the above reasons posted. Right side just doesn’t.
 
It will depend on the design. Suex, Gavin, SS, and I’m sure others are not lefty friendly.
My Blacktip was Right-handed operated, so I installed an aftermarket T-handle. My new Cuda come from the factory with T-handles. I like having the option to use either hand or both. For “me” the scooter isn’t a factor on inflator routing. I personally have used Hollis, Razor, Apeks and now Dive Rite SM rigs with DPVs & Drysuits and for me the “design” routing works well. But that is how I learned, thus comfortable.
 
The DIR leadership has been pretty good at explaining why we do things a certain way. It's less good at explaining that alternative approaches have already been tried and rejected years ago. Then these ideas resurface every few years and around we go again, often playing a game of "telephone" with second- and third-hand information. It would be helpful to document not just the "why" but also the "why not" as the reasons aren't always obvious to those with limited experience, or who only do a single type of diving. Maybe we need something like a DIR wiki? Although it's difficult to get the real experts to devote much time to writing about the basics.
