Dale Wilson picked me up early Saturday morning and we loaded up the Miss Jellyfish in his new truck. We'd be riding a bit more comfortably than the past few trips in the farm truck. It was damned cold and my hands were pretty numb by the time we finished moving cold steel tanks, and lots of boat bits. We were out and on the road as the sun was coming up and headed East. Original plans were to dive a river cave, but after some talk, we changed plans and decided to dive Merrits Mill Pond. Hit up Cave Adventurers and BS'd with Gordon a bit while we got some tanks filled. Once finished up there, we headed to Day Loop.

Twin Cave

Day Loop is a decent place to launch small boats, its also just across the pond from Twin Caves, so its an ideal place for us to start. We setup, loaded the tanks, and headed across to Twin. Its been quite a while since I've dived here and its always a great, the circuit is a favorite. We hit the water and I led into the cavern where I was greeted by literally several hundreds of bream hanging out in the basin. We dropped down the first chimney and headed down the subway tunnel. There's actually enough flow to be apparent, but still not enough to impede travel in the slightest. Visibility was the typical 60'+ except for where the catfish were mucking about the bottom. I cookied the "t" and we dropped down the first fissure into the deep section and followed it around to the jump to the rightside(heading in) of the training room. I ran the spool off the gold and into the jumpline and we headed over towards the Terminal Room. Its a really neat room with a couple domes in the ceiling. We followed the line just a bit further until we hit another "t" in the line. Dale turned the dive at this point and we started our exit. I found a lost cookie on the way out, pulled the jump spool, and we ascended up the upstream fissure. The swim back down the subway tunnel was uneventfull and the cavern was a great place for a minute or three stop before the exit. We hadn't mucked it up, visibility was good, there was a huge concentration of fish to look at, and the light coming from both exits made for quite a sight! Had a max depth of 103' with a dive time of 71 minutes. Great dive and there's pretty much endless cave to explore in the deep section.

Hole in the Wall

Motored over to Cave Adventurers in the boat, docked, and loaded up the 4 wheeler with tanks to get filled. We hit up McNasty for lunch and the tanks were ready for us by the time we were back. It was around 3 or 4PM by then, and we knew we were gonna run short on daylight if we didn't get back in the water shortly. Loaded Miss Jellyfish back up and headed to Hole in the Wall. The dock was empty when we got there, earlier there were a couple boats docked, so we were pleasantly suprised. It had only been 3 hours since we surfaced from our previous dive before we hit the water again.

I ran a primary through the cavern and down the chimney, then into the downstream goldline. We headed through and visibility started at about 20-30' and a bit milky. We pasted the Big E, the Dragon, and continued on in. Flow was imperceptable(although there was a small boil at the surface of Hole). Dome room after dome room came and went and then the cave pinched down at the Sand Dollar Restriction, which opened up into a great big dome room that came up pretty shallow. The line then goes down over a limestone arch and under another duck under into comparitively small cave(still plenty big) for about a hundred feet before opening up at a "t" with very large passage going in two different direction. This was a hair past 1900'p and we had plenty of gas, but decided it was time to go as we'd already be getting back with the sun down. Visibility by this point had improved to 50-60'. The exit was uneventfull but we enjoyed the cave all the same, along with the crawfish, salamander, and other little cave critters... even the messy ass catfish. Had a max depth of 84' with a total dive time of 88 minutes including 15 minutes of deco on backgas. We surfaced just in time for me to snap off this quick picture. I was already quite cold, the surface temps were dropping and offered no relief.

This started off as a day trip, but we decided in route to make it a weekend trip. So we hit checked into the Executive, I showered the smell of urine off me, and we hit Old Mexico before crashing.

More to come, hold up.

2-1-9

Hit up the Waffle Iron for breakfast and we headed over to Cave Adventurers again. Met up with Gary and Denise and made a few plans for later, then chilled out and waited for the sun to warm up a bit. It was probably around 10AM or so before we decided it was time to load up the Miss Jellyfish down at the dock(left it overnight here) and head over to Hole.

Hole in the Wall

We motored the short distance to Hole in the Wall to find no boats onsite, but there was a lone diver on the surface about to descend down the cavern. He had swam across from the Hole in the Wall house earlier apparently. We geared up and hit the water, I ran a primary and the lone diver was exitting. This time, I ran down the chimney and to the upstream tunnel. Visibility in this passage started around 15-20' and milky. The upstream passage seems to have larger dome rooms I think, we passed from one to another, just massively huge rooms. It didn't take long before we were at the Century Tunnel "t", which I cookied, then continued heading up the goldline. Our plan was to head up into Alford's Room(1400'p or a little better) and check it out a bit. Its pretty awesome, tons of fossils in the ceiling. There's a frog hanging off where the goldline ties into white line and goes into a shallow tunnel heading back(much smaller compared to the tunnel up to this point). We went about 50' into this tunnel, it was quite milky and we didn't venture far before turning. Had a ton of gas, but planned to do the next dive on the same tanks, so we exitted uneventfully. No deco, had a max depth of 83' for a dive time of 60 minutes.

Twin Cave

We left hole and motored over to Jackson Blue to visit with some people over there, including Rick Murchison and his friends, Gary and Denise, as well as Chris Whickman and Ben Gillespie. We hung out for a bit, then got Gary to head over to Day Loop. Dale and I hopped back in the boat and I dropped him and the gear off at Twin, then went to Day Loop to pick up Gary and his gear. After shuttling everything over, we were ready for our dive. It was about 2 hours after our first dive.

Dale was going to scout out the Skiles passage to see how nasty it was going to get(for a future trip) and me and Gary planned on doing the goldline circuit. I stuck him out ahead in the lead and I followed. We headed down the first chimney and into the subway tunnel. Visibility was similar to the previous day and we made progress easily. Once at the Skiles passage jump, Dale dropped off the tail and went to check it out(apparently it gets pretty funky after some fairly easy passage). Gary and I continued forward, passed over the first fissure, and went upstream to the second fissure and followed the goldline down and back around, then up the downstream fissure, completing the circuit. The exit was uneventfull and we were back in the cavern before we knew it. Did a quick stop and enjoyed the hoards of bream before exitting. Had a max depth of 103' for a dive time of 53 minutes, no deco.

Took quite a bit of shuttling to get everyone back on dry land, then all the vehicles where they needed to be(I sped the boat around the pond without gear to waste time waiting on the trucks, boats WAY faster without all the gear). We packed everything up, settled up at Cave Adventurers and headed out. Awesome weekend of diving the Mill Pond, it had been too long since I took advantage of the easier dives available, but I think I'll be back sooner than later as there's just SO much tunnel still available without worrying about any extra gear. Looking forward to the next big adventure :)

Great photos, thanks for sharing! Need to get up there some time.

Great sunset picture Mat. Is that a new motor on the Miss Jellyfish...I couldn't tell? Great read as always...felt like I was right there with you....of course I had to stop at the cavern as always!

Great report as usual. I need to check out upstream hole next time I am in town, downstream is probably my favorite passage in the pond so far.

SBM, somebody left a big wad of gum on the very back part of your boat :D

Great report as usual!

Same motor I bought the boat with :) Won't be long and you can enjoy a little beyond the light zone, it'll be well worth it!

Its not gum, its gasseous entrapment material!! :D

Yep... can't you tell from all the nasty green muck the boat is parked in hah!

Great seeing you again Mat and meeting several new people. I had a great time at JB practicing diving doubles for the first time. I'll just tack my reports here if you don't mind since I don't have any cool pics to share :depressed:.
I got on the road at 4:30am Sunday and was at Cave Adventurers about time they opened. I didn't know the first one to show up was suppose to bring coffee and donuts. I will try not to make that mistake again. ;)
I was trying out alot of new things so wasn't sure if I would even make it into the cave, a set of HP100's, transplate, aluminum back plate, and the conversion to din valves on my regulators. We got everything set up and Gary and I hit the water at JB around 11:30am. I had no idea the transition would be so smooth so after testing everything in the basin for a bit we made a lite penetration into the cave but stopped short of the first break for a max depth of 42ft for a 25 minute dive. Yeah!!! My first dive with doubles went very smoothly.:D
Our second dive was a deeper penetration with a max depth of 96ft for a dive lasting 34 minutes. While Gary buddied up with Mat I burned most of the gas I had left in my tanks practicing drills and playing around in 14ft of water in the basin for about 35 minutes.
