Did a little quick checking online. If I understand correctly, Caicos is not one of those 'cruise ship playground' type destinations with lots of excursions? People diss cruise ships, but areas pandering to that market often offer a range of activities - jungle hikes, ATV group rides, horse back riding, Mayan ruin tours, parasailing, etc...

So, aside from a beautiful beach scene (I am not a beach person) and eating well at restaurants, what else besides diving do the tourists do there?

I focus on this because in other posts, people more familiar with the place have indicated T&C is a rather expensive destination by Caribbean standards, rather like the Cayman Islands. With the Caymans, you can get the cruise ship playground (Grand Cayman) or take a puddle jumper & do rustic (Little Cayman or Cayman Brac), and get great diving. But I don't hear people talking up the great restaurants on L.C. or C.B.; rather how nice the buffet food is at LCBR or CBBR dive resorts. I've read a live-aboard is the way to go for the best Turks & Caicos diving .

So, for the prospective tourist sizing up Turks & Caicos, is there a compelling reason to go there instead of one of the Cayman Islands? Or what are you missing out if you do T&C by live-aboard? Just good restaurants & a pretty beach, or is there more to it?

Richard.

If you love water sports then you will be able to find something to do every day (not just sit on the beach). This is a perfect place to learn kiteboarding as the conditions are shallow and calm and the wind is consistent with a very friendly kiteboarding community. Stand Up Paddleboarding in the mangroves or out to the reef is fantastic with lots of opportunities to see cool critters like turtles and sharks and rays. Short swims to snorkel sites in various different locations that are very accessible. You can do deep-sea fishing, or sunset booze cruises. You will definitely need to rent a car here, but then you can go exploring to some secluded beaches and do some neat cliff jumping and more snorkelling.

If you're coming down, send me a message! Sometimes it helps to have someone show you around a little :D

New blog post for dive site Jasons Folly

Summary: This dive site actually started right at our halfway point from boat cove. We descended to a sandy bottom filled with Garden Eels. The site offered a lot of overhangs and cracks in the wall for fish and creatures to hide. We headed to the right and there was a lot of life on the wall, not as steep of a section but lots of coral everywhere. Mooring line pretty much is right on the wall so makes a easy descent and ascent point.

Great beach photos! I don't know who you are using for diving but Dive Provo was pretty open to suggestions regarding dive sites. My third day (I haven't wrote about those 2 dives yet) Was at West Caicos as well and I talked to them about where I've dove already and they made sure not to do those sites again. So if you read my blog and some of the sites sounds interesting to you then I recommend asking about visiting them. May will bring different weather than I had in March so you might have even more variety.
I just got back from my trip to Provo. I dove with Aqua TCI and completed my PADI Advanced Open Water Certification with them and got in few extra recreational dives as well. I had a great experience with this dive outfit - very buttoned up operation.

From initial contact, they were extremely responsive and provided thorough answers to all of my questions and tips on how to best plan the dive schedule. They picked me up at the hotel promptly each morning, briefed everyone on the boat itself and basic safety and got away from the dock quickly - as a result, we were typically one of the first boats at the dive sites - which was a great way to start the day! The boat was very comfortable with easy water entry/exit and plenty of space for gear and setup (pretty wide beam boat). The fact that they limit the maximum to 10 divers (8 guided and up to 2 students) makes for a pleasant experience both on the boat and in the water!

The dive briefings were thorough and they allowed divers maximum bottom time based on their experience/air consumption - most dives were about 60 minutes! We dove in West Caicos and French Cay - great sites with dramatic walls and plenty of "critters" including reef sharks (especially at Double D and G spot in French Cay - see below).

The owners/operators, Stephanie and Bill, were very personable and attentive. Stephanie was my instructor for the AOW and was fantastic - she gave me great feedback and many tips on tweaking my technique that really improved my diving in the week: In fact, I broke though the 60 minute dive time for the first time with them which was a milestone for me!

They run a great operation and I would highly recommend them to anyone diving in Provo!

I'm just going to throw some love on Mia Toose! I got to know her a little bit on my trip at T&C and think she's a pretty special person. If you get the chance to get to know her too, it's a " very good thing", as the saying goes. :)

Thanks for the post, I have heard great things about this dive operator and hope to try them out in the future

Awwww Such a nice thing to say! Besides the diving, the best thing about my job is getting to meet so many awesome people!

Hi all,

Just got back from diving T&C October 15-22 2016 ( two tank dives on October 17,18,19 2016). I stayed at Club Med and used the info from scubaboard to decide who to dive with. the two big winners was Caicos Adventures and Dive Provo.

Here is my 2 cents on the subject:

When I called Caicos Adventures they said they will not guarantee my dives even if I pay in advance and travel thousands of miles to get there. (turns out my friend used them years ago and was not impressed) they said if they don't have enough sign up they don't go.

Dive Provo said if I'm the only one that shows up then it is me and the dive master for a private dive. (they had so many people they had two boats going out on each of my three days of diving and it's off season in October)

IMPORTANT: from shore, all dive sites are about 1 hours boat ride from dock to reef. This is obviously why live aboards are so popular and it makes sense to book a live aboard if you want a lot of diving. I think the beaches and the land are beautiful and I will probably go back for a live aboard on a future trip but it would be a successful trip if you stay on land. When staying at Club Med and waiting for my pick up ride there was a couple waiting to be picked up by their dive shop, Provo Turtle Divers, the couple dove with them before and was on their way to dive with them again. (i think if you are repeat customer you are saying a lot)

AND HERE'S WHAT I FOUND OUT THAT WILL HOPEFULLY HELP YOU: While riding the hour to and from the reef, I picked the brain of our captain and dive masters. Here's what they said. Club Med's dive shop is a third party company and not Club Med owned as mentioned in posts from years ago. BUT.... they only visit close by reefs. North Point. and closer. they do not go to French Cay and West Caicos (some of my best dives) Possibly why Caicos Adventures only takes large groups is because they have a beautiful dive catamaran and it wouldn't make sense to take out such a large boat for a few people. There are several small operations that have very small boats and can't operate off season. The captain said these are small dive boats that take 6-8 people out. (sounds like fun) Dive Provo has been in operation for a long time and by the experience of the dive masters and the quality of the boats they have a great operation. I'm glad I went with them. I could safely say if I go back and don't use a live aboard I would use them again.

I hope this helps someone like you guys helped me.

Jeff
