Will be in COZ Nov 5-12.There will be 4 to 5 of us possibly. My wife and I have dove the cenotes around PDC, Chakmul and little brother, but want to try Tulum. Is it safe to rent a jeep and drive myself or rely on Taxi. Also wandered which dive operator to use in Tulum. We want to dive as well as do the whole ruins tourist thing. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

you can rent a jeep and drive yourself.. might even save some $$ doing it that way. From what I have heard, Abyss and Xibalba are both excellent dive centers in Tulum.

There is certainly no problem renting a car in Mexico. I and plenty of other gringos have done it many times, and I am not a risky guy. There is no particular reason to rent a jeep to drive from Playa del Carmen to Tulum; everything is paved. Be sure to get Mexican auto insurance when you rent the car, and watch out for the vicious topes (speed bumps) on the highway to Tulum. They can sneak up on you if you are not paying attention, and sometimes they may not be marked. Your main concern will be the traffic in Playa. After that, it's easy driving.
