I wouldn't be the least bit worried. Nova Scotia had a category 3 hurricane (Juan) that hit Halifax in 2003, just before we moved to the area. Then in 2010, hurricane Earl (cat. 1) hit our area directly & blew the doors off our boat house. So after those TWO, Nova Scotians took to worrying about hurricanes. I will not even take the time to google when the last one hit here prior to '03. I'm not the least bit concerned and we live right on the Atlantic. Sandy hit NYC--first one I've heard of hitting there my whole life (grew up there to age 23). Anywhere on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" as they call it (?) you can get a tsunami. So don't worry about one place.

The best place to be if a Tsunami hits is underwater and not on the surface, so knock yourself out and dive your brains out and load up on nitrogen :)

Relax. There's a much better chance of your drowning while diving.
Yes, agree, and a number of bigger percentages ways you can die, like from a dog attack or falling coconut. (see: "shark" threads).

I saw an interview on TV with a local person who survived that tsunami and he said that one of the reasons why so many people died in his area was that there was no word for "tsunami". Basically when the short warning came out, the message was that there was a big wave, or something less dangerous sounding and a lot of people flocked to the beaches to see it rather than escape to higher ground... Lots of places didn't really have higher ground but...I think after that tsunami, people are more aware of what to do if there is a warning and actually know what a tsunami is. So just be aware of how to handle a warning and enjoy yourself.

Where was it that when the water started receding, people thought oh cool and went to to explore the newly exposed sea bottom? Instead of thinking oh crap it's gonna come back and running away from shore.

Yeah, I kinda always wondered that....But, they might not be "water" people and thus candidates to take the OW course.....

Its a common thing. The images of people wandering out came out of Koh Phi Phi but there is a commonality there with many tsunami's ie the PNG Sissop Lagoon tsunami. The PNG Sissop Lagoon Tsunami had researchers asking for early warning systems in the Indian ocean but hey, probability. There are also another couple of signs Tsunamis are nearing landfall that occur pre the really noticeable drawback before the wave hits that may be observed - tiny funnels of sand are a clear indicator you are about to be in a huge world of trouble generally.

As far as safest place being underwater..that depends on the distance you are from landfall.

Divers in the Tsunami: Undercurrent 02/2005

The Probability of a tsunami making landfall at exactly the same place is very very very low. From memory the soil samples and core drills taken after PNG tsunami indicated there had been one approx 4,000 years before in the same region. No indication of there ever having been a tsunami of that magnitude hitting an area as large as the boxing day tsunami in any of the samples AFAIK.

Do you surf...JK hey if its something that is in your mind then maybe think twice about it cause it may cause you unwanted anxiety while training. But IMHO anything can happen at anytime so if we go through life letting that stop us we would just sit around watching the Walking Dead our whole life. Have fun.
