I've been hunting around trying to locate an affordable place to stay for wherever is a good place to be diving in the keys. I have a free ticket down to Miami and any place I can get to cheaply and stay at a decent price is where I want to go. Dates are flexible starting anytime after Feb 20th thru April with a cutout of about ten days in March that I have to be in New Mexico. Does anyone know of any screaming deals?

The Comfort Inn in Florida City is 15 minutes to Key Largo. It is about $35 per night. They are clean and have a fridge in the room. Most people staying there are divers.

i've stayed there before and it is a very nice place indeed. just north of there is a fairly "iffy" area, but you'll be ok if you stay close to the hotel and
head south. also, there are a couple of nearby mini-malls with food and
pharmacies and so on.

But I think life is "iffy"

I spent every other weekend last summer there and we never had any issues. Of course it is a very different culture in town. We had dinner with the locals and it was rather interesting!

totally agree- Florida city/homestead is the cheapest option- don't leave the drive too late though- traffic can be bad getting onto the keys. Thers a comfort inn and knights inn - all the usual cheapie motels there. On the actual keys, you can try the travelodge which is down the road from the main key largo boats- around $70 per night- It's not a great place- but cheap- or there is the pelican motel- same story- clean and OK if a bit rough around the edges.

yeah, and as far as "iffy" gets, that area is not that iffy... it's just that i am
not used to what i can only describe as a very masculine woman knocking
on my car window offering me a *bleep* *bleep* for twenty bucks.

but if you're into that, hey, knock yourself out =P
