asked this somewhere else and got no response - does anyone know if road access to Troy springs is open yet. In Deloach's book it was claimed that you could get there by car in 2002, but I've heard nothing about it.

I know it's not a great dive but seems like a great place to practice and check out new gear...

Only access I know of is by boat. If youa re looking for a place to eval. equipment, try Royal. It is in the same area, and is a park, so access is no problem. It's also free.

Thanks - Deloach's book said there was going to be road access tp Troy springs this year, but no-one seems to know. Anyway, thanks, I'll give Royal a try sometime soon...

I don't know for sure (because I've never been), but most recent reports I've read state that the steamboat wreck is virtually gone.

I have dove Troy springs many times over the years, always by boat.

I have to go out to Jacksonville and back Mon - Tues. I plan to try to dive it Tues from the road access. From Branford go 5 miles NW on 27 until you see the Troy Springs sign, turn right on the dirt road for 1/2 mile. the last time That I dove it was a year and a half ago, epth was 70' With all the rain, probably deeper.

Anyone want to join on Tues?

Troy springs is Open (road Access).

My wife & I met _kurt_ & his wife there last sunday & had a great time.

There is an honor system check in : $2 per car & $5 per diver.

They built a handicap ramp to the spring that goes back & forth 5 times, so it makes for a long hump with tanks. I am taking a handtruck or wagon next time.

There are picnic tables & grills as well as bathrooms.

My wife & I will be there Monday doing some equipment checks before our next Key Largo trip.

See you there...

Yes the wreck is still visible, but just barely.
Just the bare skeleton of ribs is all thats left.
It sits in about 10' where the brown river water meets the clear spring water.
Max depth last week was 76'.

I dove Troy in January by swimming across the Suwannee River with all my dive gear. The road is now open so you don't have to do this. There'a a high nitrate content there which causes a lot of algae blooms. It's an ok dive. You can see what it's like on a dvd of the Florida Springs now available.

Merkin, what part of Florida are you in?

I like to dive Troy. I will hit it 6/10 P.M. on my way back from JAX. I am attaching a top side photo I took a year and a half ago. Then there was no road access.

At the time of this photo the depth was about 70', knee deep at the wreck on the river run.

When the water is low, it is as clear as Ginnie. When it is up, the tannin flows in from the river, so do a lot of turttles and large fish.

Royal is an ok gear check out. As long as no one else is or has been there. A lot of silt on the bottom, The cavern had a large killer catfish in it.

When I found it using the dive guide in 97, it took me two days, using the directions, i.e. go down and turn at the green dumpsters. Which where not there anymore.
