While diving with fmike last summer at Ft. Wetherill, we saw a juvinile butterfly fish near the right-hand side of the mouth of the right-hand cove at about 40 feet. It was a four-eyed butterfly, if I remember correctly.

I was in the NEAQ the other day, and they have a small display of some of the tropical fish rescued in new england waters. One of them looked just like the one I saw, so I'd like to think the little dude got lucky and survived the winter.
 
Every Fall the New England Aquarium Dive Club leads a tropical fish dive in Rhode Island. Sometimes the aquarium would like us to dive for certain tropical fish (usually butterfly fish) for them to care for in the aquarium. These fish will otherwise die in the wintertime. Matt, you probably have seen some fish saved!
 
I've heard of people seeing tropicals off Boston as well, as people have posted, they get spun off in gulf stream edies.

I'd love to catch one at some point and put it in one of my aquariums.
