Having traveled many times to Churchill, Canada for polar bear photography, I finally have time in my schedule to put together a trip in August to experience their beluga whales in the Hudson Bay. The belugas come up into the bay in the summer months. I missed the chance to get fully in the water with them for photography (outlawed with broad regulations in all of Canada a few years ago) but they can still offer a similar experience through "beluga boarding" which is floating on a matt with your face and camera in the water to see and capture images of the whales. The whales are curious and will come up to our boat to see us.

I have a boats reserved in early August 2025

In water activities will be a half day experience and in the other part of the day we drive the coastline and wilderness areas around Churchill to photograph Polar Bears and arctic wildlife from our vehicle. Yes, polar bears are still in the area in the summer and many are mother and cub pairs. Fields of blooming flowers are possible as are clear skies for Northern Lights.
From my many years of polar bear trips I bring my guests to the Northern Studies Centre inside the wildlife reserve. This eco friendly research station hosts scholars and guests year round. They also have observatory and outside view decks for great views and dark sky photography and aurora photography.

Let me know if you would be interested in this unique experience and I will continue to arrange this trip.

This sounds like an exciting adventure! Any chance that you will have another trip next August 2026 instead of this summer? Wonder what would the temperature be like in the water as well as on land?

Hi Rachel,

As it turns out, we are not doing the 2025 trip due to not enough people but are now looking at 2026 with a group of people traveling as friends. There might be slots for individuals depending on how many commit.
We are also looking to see what the July 2025 results will be to determine dates or if it is work doing. The places up there do not accept reservations for hotels, etc until January 2026 when the airline schedule is posted (makes sense since it is almost the only way to get there - slow train is other option)

If you would like to be on the notification list email me at info@gregorysweeney.com or another message here later in the year and i get notified.

Thanks,

Gregory Sweeney
