There is a picture I've seen on some of the tech diving boards of someone dropping in on the Wilkes wearing quad 104's. With 4 Al-80 stages. That's enough to make me groan...

Yep, spend all that time making up a nice vintage triple set with correct repro fittings, bands, harnesses and put on a modern Freedom plate. Sounds like a plan.

Well, the harness shown is from one of your travel bands.

I thought I would give you a plug.

Pete

A Freedom Plate would cam band right up on that center tank and your problems with it being uncomfortable on your back would be over.
In fact, I'll bet you could put an Oxycheq Mach V 40# wing under the plate and the inflation tubes would fit right into the areas between the side tanks perfect.
I know it's not vintage but neither are triple 72's.

Super job BTW.

Actually triple 72's are vintage. US Divers had triple 72's, just not in that configuration. They mounted the tanks in a triangle formation using two sets of double bands. Two tanks were connected together using a double yoke bar connector and the third tank was connected to the center of the bar yoke by tubing. It was part if their commercial divers line. They can be found on page 18 of the 1968 catalog.

Nice Job Pete ---

Putting the plate on will be easy -- just cam band it right to the center tank with the stainless (scuba pro style) cam straps -- i have some for you ...

cousteau used triple 72s back in the day -- they had them inside a shroud upside down with some hard piping ........

nice job

Mike nelson had the same tripples I was talking about, back in 57. not sure 72's but tripples with an aqua lung attached.

Happy Diving

I've really got no idea myself, but considering that 318.25m is about 1044 feet and nearly 33 atm, I've got to assume that he was loaded up with more nitrogen and helium than even saturation divers.

I've also got to really wonder what those kinds of pressures would do to your body. Do our organs, nervous, lymph and circulatory systems still function properly at those depths? I doubt it.

And I agree entirely about the insanity of it. If I were to ever make a dive like that I'd want it to be in a submarine or bathysphere.

Very unusually excellent Mr Gilldiver from a broad perspective.

You could name the tanks. Nuno, NO and Gomes.

Just so you all know, here were the conditions of the "contest"

Promotions

Triple 72 cubic foot manifold contest RULES!

The manifold must be of the vintage style that Captain has developed using a J-60 tank valve. No OMS, Dive Rite, or similar parts.

The bands must be made of stainless in the style that Captain has developed.

It must have a period correct cotton harness.

It must consist of 3 similar 72 cubic foot steel tanks. They cannot be mismatched and different colours. Galvanized gray is ideal.

The winner will be determined by the first person that completes the set and submits a picture and proof that the tanks have been used on at least one dive.

The test dive may be done in a pool, but the proof must be submitted in the form of a video showing the tanks in action (this is done to accommodate people in the colder north that may not have a drysuit).

The winner of the contest will be determined by Vintage Double Hose and The Scuba Museum based on the rules as stated! Ultimately the decision is ours and there will not be an appeals process.

The contest will run until Jan 1st of 2011 or earlier if a definitive winner is identified.

The prize is one brand new FX 50 Fathom in Black, Green, or Blue. The regulator will be awarded by the Scuba Museum and Vintage Double Hose completely rebuilt and ready to slap on your new Behemoth Triple set up!

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
