Trip to Bali only partly diving - where is it best to stay?

Hi All - I am off for a strictly diving trip in March and can't wait but that is not my issue.

A couple we know want to come to Bali with us in Sept/Oct this year. Ideally we want to stay in a self contained villa somewhere with access to Diving and Ubud. We plan to stay for 8 days and I would rather stay in one place and take a driver out for trips.

Two of us will do a couple of days diving in Tulamben most probably but we are totally open to suggestions. The only fixture is the girls want to do Ubud for a couple of days whilst we are off diving somewhere.

All suggestions will be taken seriously.

Check out the Tegal Sari hotel in Ubud. Great prices and great location. We used the Lotus Bungalow Resort in Candiasa once and dove Tulamben and nusa penida etc from there. Great resort and AWESOME dive operation. Very well run! Loved it. We are headed to Scuba Seraya this fall after a LOB trip as I have heard great things about that resort. Have fun!

If you have two days to dive you may prefer one day Tulamben and one day Nusa Penida as these are the two best sites in Bali. If you stay in Sanur it's about 2 hours drive from Tulamben, and about 45 minutes speedboat to Nusa Penida, and about 45 minutes drive to Ubud.

Stay at padang bay, and rent a car with driver; this will give you lot of flexibility.

I second the recommendation for Padang Bai. It's partway to Sanur, Ubud and Tulamben, and there are ferries over to the Gilis.

I just got back from Padang Bai and would definitely recommend it and will hopefully be getting back there in June.

Went through and stayed with Absolute Scuba, great experience and beautiful location.

Hi,

I have lived out there for a couple of years, a word of warning, if you want to dive Tulamben, it is worth it, I would try and stay as close as possible. My reasoning, all the resorts dive the wreck and if you get there to late then you will dive with the rest of Bali, best times I would say are early morning, pre 7am or after 3-4pm.

I stayed with a company called wreck divers, right opposite the wreck, good operation, decent accom and very good guides.

Don't do the Gili Islands, not from a diving stance anyway, now 16 dive shops there.

Yes, this is a good option too. Having a car with driver is a nice idea in Bali, and doesn't cost much at all.

Do be aware though that in Bali most of the roads run North-South, so getting to Ubud from Padang Bai (West-East) can take more time than you might expect, though it isn't a big problem and you'll have a scenic drive.
