Hi all,

Does anyone know if trip insurance would cover missing a live aboard due to delays caused by volcanic ash? I saw on the news last week the Bali airport was shut down due to Mt. Bromo.
Thanks!

Your question is very broad. Your answer will depend specifically on the fine print of a given trip insurance policy. You might be covered ... or not. Go to a website like Squaremouth ...

Quote Form - Travel Insurance - squaremouth

... and enter your trip information. You'll end up with a spread sheet of various companies offering policies, all a bit different in price and coverage. Read the "Plan Detail" of a policy that appeals to you either for its price or policy inclusions. You can also bump up the coverage in specific areas of many policies. In most cases, this is a "you get what you pay for" proposition ... higher premium, more/better coverage. DO NOT just blindly buy a policy and tell yourself, "There, I'm covered," without reading it thoroughly. Most reputable companies also offer a toll-free phone number where you can ask about a specific scenario, such as you have stated in your OP. And as a safeguard, most companies will allow you a few days after paying for and receiving the policy to cancel it with no monetary penalty.

Here's a site you won't find on a place like Squaremouth (though they are pretty competitive and complete), but it "might" offer a package that works for you, and cheaper. Same deal ... read the details ...

I was caught by the Icelandic volcano and had fortuitously purchased trip insurance from CSA. They did cover the delay up to the limits in the policy. However I read of other companies that did not. So, again, you have to check each policy.

But beware ... even within the same company, there can be policies that will cover this scenario, and some that will not.
