HI:

I would like to know if anyone out there has any experience with any of the 2 avail. tri-mix computers on the market. I have an explorer, but have only used it once.

Thanks,

JP

I have both the explorer (about 50 trimix dives on it) and the latest VR3..
I haven't had any real problems with the explorer, some minor issues all were fixed with software upgrades. If you don't have at least version 1.16 (current is 1.18) I would get it upgraded (free of charge), much better on power and some other enhancements. I actualy had 1 of the first computers shipped (version 1.06, then updated to 1.12, now updated to 1.18), I received it last february and am satisfied. I just got the new VR3 and haven't dove it yet, the earlier VR3 had lots of problems.. I ALWAYS cut tables (worst case) but like the freedom of running a computer profile especially multilevel dives but don't dive past my bail out tables.

I love the buttons on the explorer when in cold water they are the best, but are a bit unconfortable for the few few dives in warm water without gloves.

Their turn around (for upgrades) is not the greatest, but The size of the display on the computer and the features can't be beat. I have used it both on open circuit and closed circuit rebreather dives (many of the bugs were in the RB functions).

If you haven't been told, put a small dab of conductive grease on the battery tab, there have been a few instances reported that computers have reset underwater, This is a slight possibility when water temp changes drastically since the case is made out of lexan and the tab is metal, also be sure to follow the manufactures recommendation on installing the battery cap, THIS IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER. Improper installation of the battery (over or under tightening) can also cause the computer to reset as pressure around the computer changes.

Thanks for your help, I am also getting the new vr3 with the remote sensor for the loop of a ccr. I let you know when I get it.

Thanks

I am a long away from needing tri-mix, but am always interested in the latest innovations in dive equipment.

So please post a good review of the VR3 once you receive it (aka first impressions) and another review once you've gotten it wet a few times. I'd be very interested in hearing about it

Why is our friend PADISCUBAPRO in need of a trimix computer? He couldn't be engaged in decompression diving, going deeper that 130' or breathing exotic gases? I think padi should know about this.

In reality, how much does a mixed gas computer go for? and how do you use it on your dives? (planing, control, you know)

There are currently ony 2 trimix computers available both retail for $1400-1600

Even though I dive with 2 computers, I still plan all dives with tables and don't exceed their limits, the computer allows me to get out of the water faster on a multilevel dive (or extend it in shallow water), on square profiles they are pretty close to tables and are basically used to log the dive info..

If there is a buck to be made Padi will eventually come around..
First they were against nitrox, then they promoted, aginst deco, now they promote (dsat).. they have a gas blender class, I'll bet Trimix is just around the corner....

I do tech instruction through ANDI and TDI, and have no plans on teaching any PADI "tech" class, I'll stick with their rec stuff since those materials available to the diver and instructor are well done.
