Traveling with Equipment!

I just got back from a recent liveaboard trip to Socorro. Great trip will post video soon. I travelled with my complete rebreather and regs for bailout in my carry on. I was stopped once and swabbed after that no problems after that. And RJP that was well more than 10K .

Well sure Sean, if you toss a breather into your carry-on...

Also, don't forget that my wife thinks I bought all my gear on e-bay for $30!

I fly from Alberta to Orlando regularly and, on the way to diving (FL) take all of my gear carry-on, save for tanks and weights (which I rent), and fins, knives, and gear-repair tools (packed in checked luggage). I haven't had a problem yet. Flying back I check all gear unless I'll need it within the week.

Sort of why I was asking...as even I couldn't manage to spend half that on four complete sets of regs.

Flown all over and almost never had a problem. But once my instructor son and I were stopped by a stupid TSA inspector who would not let our regulators pass through carry-on. She was a power hungry obnoxious person who wanted us to argue with her so she could do some more stuff. However, I did not comply and calmed my son. She put all the equipment into checked luggage. Thank goodness it was waiting for us on the other side of the Atlantic. After that I carry a printed TSA printout about Scuba Regulators and other equipment that is OK to fly with - But I've never needed it. However, I am relatively sure that this would have made no difference to this TSA jerk. By the way, I've notice that TSA workers are getting more friendly and I've never had an bad experience with any airport security before or since her.

I have flown all over the states, the Carribean, and Europe with all my dive gear in a carry on, minus of course my dive knife which I check. I usually also carry my spare pony bottle ( 6 CF) which I remove the first stage and cap the bottle. Depending on who is reviewing the scanner depends on whether they require an additional look-see. If the operator is 'scuba knowledgable' the stuff goes right thru. Sometimes they want to look inside the pony. It is usually the reg's that cause them to question the gear and sometimes I send them thru separately so my gear bag is not disturbed. In the end I have never had anything 'rejected' and it is worth the minor inconvenience to take my own stuff.

I carry on anything I don't want lost with the exceptions of the TSA banned items. A 20" roller bag will hold my wet suit, BCD, one mask, weight belt, snorkle, reg.,dive computer,log book,one change of clothes and dive booties. It has passed inspections with certain agents being divers and knowing what the gear is. On our last trip the agents knew what it was and still opened the bags and wiped down our gear.

I am leaving on Jan 14 for FL from Denver. This will be my first time travelling with my gear. I am hoping there will be no problems. I know a number of people here in the Denver area that travel quite a bit with their gear and haven't had a problem. Wit the attempted bombing on Christmas, I am hoping TSA won't be overly paranoid.

I'm planning to pack my mask and regs in my carry on for my trip to Mexico in 2 wks. From what I have read here this should pose no problem whatsoever, correct? Sounds good! The last thing I need is for my scuba gear to be misinterpreted as terrorist equipment

Always a good idea, if it works. The rules & regs are being rewritten on the fly so things could change day to day. Stay tuned.
