Usually I carry on my mask, computer, and regs and check everything else. On a recent trip my wife put her BP/W, mask, STA, etc. in her carry on bag and I carried our regs, masks, and computers. She had no issues carrying her stuff on. TSA didn't even open her bag.

I carry on my DiveRite Transplate and sometimes I have to show it and sometimes they just say....Dive gear??....and let me go.

The only time I've ever had security interested in my BP was leaving the airport in Cancun last May. They ran all arriving passengers' luggage through an X-ray machine and had me dump my duffel so they could look at the plate. Very strange--maybe they thought I was trying to import weapons or something.

I reserve my carry on for stuff that are likely to get damage or are essential for my trip.

Comps, mask, regs/hoses, wing and bulbs. The plate, fins, reels, smb, etc I leave on in the check in.

....so the X-ray dudes in Cancun had never seen a B/P ??? That's what trips me out, Cancun is one of the many turist/scuba spots that I should think it would be impossible to avoid seeing scuba gear stuff (regs....B/P's) if you're on the job for more than 5 or 10 minutes, so I'm guessin' your security guy was a brand new hire and had only been working there for 5 minutes!

I fly from NY to Fl about 6 times a year I l alway carry on my BP/W, regs, computer, fins, smb, reel and wet suit. TSA every once in a while will bother me but believe it or not it is always in Palm Beach :dontknow: you would think of all places they would understand flying with dive gear

In the past I have loaded my backplate and harness into a backpack, then stuff 2 regs into my reg bag, which fits in the same backpack. Then my mask, dive computer, logbook, ipod, etc... The reason I carry on the BP is for the weight issue (stainless plate) to free up more weight in the checked bag. I have since switched to an alum plate, and got the Dive Caddy. I dont see me using it like its intended for, mainly as a better backpack. The old one is a bit uncomfortable.

Never had an issue with the plate thru security, but I always pull the reg bag out of the backpack as it usuially get the wave-around to the hand search. Not an issue...I go thru the line farther ahead of my wife and it usually times out right - I get done and she goes right thru.

It's it obvious?

Because the only places where BP/Ws are being examined by TSA folks are in dive hot spots, it's not a security issue. It's just that the TSA guy/gal is a diver and wants to examine superior gear. :D

True, I have had many asking about my gear or telling me about theirs. Some have really examined my simple modifications on some of it and liked the idea and wanted to copy.

Can't say I've ever had the TSA people discuss scuba gear 'mods' with me...usually it's a somewhat intimidated reaction, and they must be thinking my gear is somehow involved in the 'Manhattan Project" or 'Area 51". :)
