ok well thats reassuring. I also have jet fins so that was a lot of weight I was thinking about but if I could take my backplate off that would be even better. now here is my next question and I'm sure someone will complain but idk how to take apart and re assemble my bp/w setup. I'm assuming its not to hard correct?

Any easier way is to use a STA like this. You only need to undo two wingnuts.

Would the newly released SS XT Lite Backplate from Dive Rite be a better solution for travel and everyday use? I'm looking to buy my first BP/W setup this week. I dive in mainly cold, but warm waters as well when traveling.

SCUBA Diving Equipment for Technical, Sidemount, Rebreather, Wreck and Cave Diving: Dive Rite, Inc - Product Catalog - Stainless Steel XT Lite Backplate

Personslly I don't think it's "lighter enough" to warrant choosing that over a regular six-pound BP. Especially if most of your diving is up here in cold water. Traveling with a standard BP is no problem if you pack sanely.

What do you need to "take apart" other than taking the wing and cam bands off the plate?

Take a look at where everything is. Take a few pics with your phone before taking it apart, then put it all back together the same way,

That is probably what I would do. I just meant like taking the straps off the plate and like lacing them back through. I have a dive rite bp/w it looks kind of complicated. Although if i probably looked closely i could figure it out. The wing and the STA would be easy. I think its just 2 wing nuts lol Sadly this wont matter until next spring/summer when I can dive again anyway :(

Nobody I know takes the harness off the plate for travel. It squishes up pretty easily.

I can't imagine.

I just packed for a week of diving and my BP/W was the easiest thing to pack. Goes right flat in the bottom of a rolling duffle.

Personally I never travel with my BP/W... I use a soft harness (old Scubapro X-Tek, similar to the original Dive Rite Transpac) and wing. Much lighter and easier to pack.

Until my kids were grown we travelled with four sets of scuba gear; everyone carried their masks, reg set, computer, and camera on board, everything else was checked.

Never had an issue.

On a diving vacation we do not need much other than bathing gear, flip flops a t shirt or two and a sweatshirt

That is true. Ill probably just put it in my dive bag as checked gear. unless i can figure out how to turn it into a carry on backpack. that would be pretty cool. do you think that would cause any security issues? i dont imagine it will but idk?
