Hello,

looking to purchase my first set of gear and thinking about what fins to get. I will mostly dive during travels, so size and weight is a consideration. Not sure how you guys pack your scuba gear, but I will probably get a dedicated carry on suitcase, so the fins should fit in there.

I have watched videos, read through this sub and several blogs, but still have a few questions

  • Boot only fins vs flexible barefoot/boot fins: I will mostly use the fins in destinations like the mediterranean, the red sea and SEA. Maybe some lake diving here in germany. Does it make sense to get fins I can also use barefoot? It does not feel like a bit hassle to also bring boots to your warmwater boat dives, but I am not sure if I might regret it. Also is it possible to wear neoprene socks instead of boots for boat dives?
  • How important is weight: Travel fins are always advertised as being super light weight. To me it feels like 1kg +/- does not really make a big difference, as I have never even come close to the weight limit of checked luggage. Personally it feels like I'd rather have sturdier fins and +1kg of weight. Am I overseeing something?
  • Any opinions on the Sucbapro Go travel fins? They seem pretty nice, but also very light and I am afraid, that they might be too floppy
I might purchase a 2nd pair of fins at some point, but right now I'd like one pair which checks most of my boxes. I am aware that I will have to make some compromises here and there though

Thanks in advance!
Sorry, this post h

Anything short of the long freedive fins are easy enough to pack. Buy the ones you like to dive with. For me, those are the DiveRite XTs or the Deep Six Eddy fins. I usually put them in my carryon because if I ever have a luggage issue and have to rent gear, I don’t want to have to deal with floppy fins for a week.

Scubapro super nova or Tusa hiflex with triforce blades, both can be disassembled for packing. The Tusa have a very versatile foot pocket and I can use the same one for rock boots or just water shoes, heel strap is easily adjusted without tools.

I have a set of go travels, i wish they were a bit stiffer. I would look to maybe check out the go sports open heel. I would not do closed heel barefoot fins.

I meant the open heel ones, but as far as I am aware there are some you can still use barefoot like the scubapro go travel

Go travels were my go to travel fins but now I use Scubapro supernova
