No, there are 2 lengths of webbing & 5 "D" rings to a Hog rig.

1 piece of webbing & 2 "D" rings for the crotch strap.

1 piece of webbing & 3 "D" rings for the harness. 1 "D" ring on each shoulder & 1 on the left hip.

Some Hog divers make claims that if the harness were to be properly adjusted then a crotch strap is not needed.

Whatever float their boats. As for me, if the Transplate harness is good enough for Dive Rite staff to do cave dives and arctic dives with, then it's good enough for me.

OK, but the OP's question wasn't, what's good enough for the Dive Rite staff & yourself, but rather "I need advice as it pertains to GUE standards."

I started off with a transplate but found it to be uncomfortable, I did not dig into the issue much before I switched to my make shift hog harness.

I use an OMS SS bp w/ pad, Dive Rite Rec Wing, DIY hog harness, Halycon crotch strap, Oxycheq shoulder pads. I piece mill my setup together from craigslist, eBay, online retailers, and my LDS. This is what I dive, and does it meet DIR & GUE standards, absolutely not, but then I'm not a DIR or GUE diver either. I do not know how GUE & DIR differ, but then I really don't care. Does this mean I will die, absolute not. For the folks that say anything different, I have one saying for you, then why would wish that fate on someone you don't know.

My training is coming from PADI, and yes I did say PADI.

So my post is pretty much irrevalent to the OP question.

so why did you post it?

And in my previous post, I've stated that the Transplate harness is not GUE standards. I also told the OP that there's more than one way to skin a cat. You don't have to go GUE in order to get superb technical diving training.

Unless you plan on diving exclusivly with doubles I wouldn't recomend the rec wing. It's not a single tank wing, even if the manufacture claims that u can. You can use a boat anchor for a weight belt but should u? No! In my opinion stick with oxycheq, dss, or halcyon for your wing selection. They will hook u up with a wing for any king of diving.

a HOG harness is dirt cheap, yet it's what a lot of people seem to end up using even after trying padded harnesses. start with a HOG harness, and if you're not happy with it after a few dives then look at spending a lot more on something like a transplate. if you find you like the HOG harness then you'll have saved yourself some $$$ AND need less lead weight (that you'd otherwise need compensate for the buoyancy of the padding)

I did spend a few extra dollars and bought a Halcyon backplate. The edges of the openings for the webbing are so smooth that I should never have the wear on the webbing that I have heard happens with other backplates. The Halcyon was a bit more expensive than other brands, but worth it IMHO.

I have one (with a Venture wing) And I'm planning on removing the shoulder pads..they seem to be more trouble than they're worth. Always twisting when donning it on land.

Since I'm going to have it apart, I'm probably just going to make it a HOG rig and be done with it.

Cbrich,

What did you find uncomfortable with the trans plate compared to the OMS? Was it the lack of pad? The shape/size? What if the trans plate had a pad? Looking forward to your response.
