To be perfectly honest, I don't see much difference between the two.

I dive with a bp/wing mostly because of the stability that it provides over anything else, although I admit that some of the "better" BC's that have a hard structure built into them are almost as good in terms of stability. The Black Diamond, for example, comes to mind here. Of course, it'd make for a terrible travel BC...

And I agree that with the padding removed, the TPII probably weighs less than an AL plate and harness. With the padding, though, it'd be an interesting experiment to find out which one was heavier... At least when wet.

I was simply responding to archman's inquiry; yes, they feel very different, but it's not entirely accurate to say that bp/wings are less comfortable. It really depends on where your discomfort is. The TPII's padded straps tend to feel more "comfy" when you're walking around topside, but I find the actual plate in a bp/wing more "comfy" than the padded back of the TPII, even if it doesn't look that way in the store. Regardless, both pretty much dissappear underwater. I prefer the stability of a hard plate on my back... But Dive Rite is selling a plate to go on the TPII anyway... So again, it's sorta a wash.

IMHO, all of the "padding" is pointless anyway, as soon as you put 3 mil or more of neoprene on... And like you said, even moreso in the water where the weight goes to zero.

Seajay,

What kind of wing would you recommend for warm water ?

In the dive club I go to quite a few blokes are keen on Halcyon gear ( yep they are DIR) but in the UK it's coldwater diving and these blokes dive with twins. I'd probably be looking at Halcyon gear myself for the UK for singles (I am not DIR and cannot see myself doing the type of diving they do - deco etc) but for warm water I'd prefer something a little cheaper - any ideas?

Plus I have to get a torch, spools and regs soon so the ole budget needs to be within bounds. :)

Thanks SeaJay,

That gives me some homework to do. While I won't be getting a regular BC I have to say that the Wing/BP does seem to be a pain to understand for the novice like me.

I am tempted to go for a Halcyon Eclipse for coldwater and just use a hired BC - seems a lot less bother! :)

That's what a lot of people "aim" to do...

Then they get accustomed to their bp/wing when they dive "cold" water...

Then they begin dreading having to use a "hired" BC...

Next thing you know, they're using a bp/wing for everything.

At least, that's just an observation... I'm not saying that will happen to you.

The best setup I've seen is someone who simply sets up a backplate and harness the way they like... Then they simply add the wing they want and go diving. Many people have a doubles wing and a singles wing and just switch back and forth depending on which rig they're diving.

I have no experience what so ever with backplates. I'm a warm water wimp and dive a Transpac with 30 lb wing.

However, prior to purchasing the Transpac I did do a lot of research.

If you own and like a BP/wing for cold water, how about getting an aluminum BP and single wing for warm water ? I'd be concerned a SS BP would be too heavy for warm water diving and not allow enough ditchable weight.

SeaJay,

" Next thing you know, they're using a bp/wing for everything.

Liar!!! :) You know this will happen as night follows day !!! :)
Still in my case it might take a little longer. I went to the club to overcome a fear of mask removal - next thing I know I am looking at wings and have done some coldwater dives - dem dare DIR blokes are a contagious disease !!!!

Ronrosa,

I don't own a wing yet but yes what you suggest is what I am veering towards and joking aside I think what SeaJay is alluding to is also what might happen but not immediately!

Thanks guys
