I was wondering what people do for training on a homemade rebreather? Also this would be my first rebreather. I am looking at an IDA 71.

I'd recommend getting certified on a unit before building one. Even if you don't want that unit just learning how to use one will help you with the design of your own.

Building an O2 RB or a full blown CCR?

Go to www.rebreatherworld.com and get ahold of Dave Sutton there. I believe he has is able to train on that RB.
The certification for a homebuild has been an ongoing problem for RB builders but training is possible if you get mentored by an experienced instructor who is not only familiar with RBs but familiar with the type of unit you wish to dive. Experience is key to this issue and although you will probably not get a cert card there is no substitute for proper training.
When I converted my Draeger Dolphin by installing a KISS valve I was able to get training from a KISS instructor.

you know, sometimes i wonder if people read the posts on a thread before adding their two cents worth
