Try to stay in town as the resorts south are a destinantion in themselves. A cab ride RT could be 40US or more....

$40 r/t for a taxi to where? I stayed at the Intercon Presidente and it was a standard fare of $5 or 50 pesos each way to downtown for two passengers. The trip to the airport from the Intercon was about $9 or 90 pesos. Granted, the Intercon is one of the closer resorts south of town, but $40 r/t seems excessive. I could be mistaken (it's happened before) but if you're paying $20 for a one-way taxi trip anywhere on Cozumel, you'd better end up at Punta Sur for beers on the beach, or Coconuts on the East shore for a fish taco.

ps> looking into the intercontinental presidente hotel..
We have stayed at Hotel Cozumel (formerly Las Brisas). The food was good and the rooms were above average. Dive Paradise has a shop on the grounds which makes it easy for booking your dives. With the package we purchased, tanks for shore diving were free. Several people did shore diving from the hotel, but I didn't talk to any of them to find out if it was good or bad.

We dove in August of '03 and the cost was $900 for 7 nights room/food/drink, 5 days of 3 tank dives, one night dive, airfare, and airport transfers.

We are headed back down in October '04, and have booked at El Cozumeleno Beach Resort. My wife and daughter are going on this trip and wanted a beach. That is one thing Hotel Cozumel is lacking. They have a sandy area at the edge of the water, but it is not a beach.

Good luck.

Here's a link to union taxi fares on the island. You should print it off and take it with you.

ps> looking into the intercontinental presidente hotel..

I stayed at the Intercon Presidente from May 23-30 and had a great time. It's one of the pricier hotel resorts on Cozumel, but feels like it's worth it. I dive but my wife does not (yet) and we both enjoyed our stay. It's close enough to town that a $5 (50 peso) taxi ride doesn't feel like a chore. We also rented a jeep and found the flexibility of exporing the island on our own (over the course of a week) welcome. If you want to "do it all," like visiting the ruins, driving around the island, etc. it's probably a good idea to rent a vehicle. If you're more focused on diving and nightlife downtown, then you can probably just do taxis.
As far as diving is concerned, I dove with Scuba Du, the onsite Dive Operator at the Intercon and found them to be very helpful, friendly and fun-loving. Very convenient to be able to stroll down from your room to the dock and hop aboard. I didn't do any shore dives, but heard that the reef and reef denizen right offshore were great. (I really enjoyed Santa Rosa and Colombia-Deep). The Intercon was a great place to stay for our first visit to Cozumel. I wouldn't mind exploring other places on future visits, but will always be glad I can rely upon the Presidente and Scuba Du. Hope this helps and be sure to give us a trip report when you get back.

You know that the Cozumeleno is in the north hotel zone, and therefore not nearly so convenient for diving, right?

hey gang,

i think we're really planning on doing cozumel for the july 4th weekend..
can anyone tell me the absolute "must do's" for only a 3 day vacation!?

we want to get as much diving as possible, not spending too much time being shipped here and there....and we would also like the free shore diving from the hotel.....and last but not least, some good eating!

so! if you can give me some pointers, i would love you to death!

ps> thanks to james goddard.....been really helpful to me...as well as the rest of the board members.

pss> i can't wait to go!!! do you think the weather/storms will be ok for july 4th weekend???

take good care, all...

All I ever do when I go is dive eat sleep. I keep saying that next time I go I'm going to do something else along with the diving but it hasn't happened yet IMO "must do's" the other side of the island stop at Coconuts for the view and a drink.

I didn't see where you mentioned which hotel you were staying at :06: but off of the Hotel Cozumel where we stay the diving is at best average.

Eating out Prima's, La Choza, Casa Denis, Especias, Tony Rome's.

The weather this time of year is hurricane season so it's a crap shoot. We just got back last Friday right when the deluge hit the island, but we had great weather didn't rain the whole week and currents were mild. You pay your money you take your chances. I have several friends and my brother who will be there next week. They are hoping for good weather and good viz after all the runoff from the big rain over the weekend.

We love it there and hope to return in Dec. Have fun and relax don't try to cram too much in on a 3 day trip. ;)

parro!

thanks for the info~
that's just it, we don't know WHERE to stay.....we're trying to find a place near "everything", a nice hotel.......one with free shore diving...

any input is much appreciated!

They other posters indicate that if you go with the inhouse dive op you get free tanks for shore diving in front of the chosen hotel. I don't know since I don't go with the inhouse dive ops.

When you say a hotel close to everything I assume you mean town. There are several close in. Hotel Barracuda,Plaza las Glorias, Scuba Club, Hotel Cozumel, & Caribe Blu are within a mile of town. They all vary in price and ammenities. Again IMO shore diving is average at best.
