Um...don't overreact...the "let 'em rip" was meant for the five pressing questions he's been wanting to ask about the book...thank you very much! Nothing to do about "ripping" someone!

Actually, lets NOT 'let'em rip' - at least not the way we've been going.

With great respect to all concerned, lets keep this thread civil.

Lets have no ripping on people or other intermural bozonity.

Thanks,

Doc

Yeah, Amazon just got a couple of orders from me.... so obviously if you are a diving author, it will serve well to get someone to write a "counter-expose" and create an Oprah moment over the story to insure through the roof sales. :)

It was never our intention to write a text book, a history book, or a reference book. .... Rob wrote a very dramatic rendering of a true story.

Just wait for the movie. Fodder for the trolls...

All,

Thanks for all the nice comments, welcoming me to SB.

I have always been something of a nostalgic guy who will drive by my old neighborhoods. When the opportunity presents itself I will stop by Scotty's in Springfield. We never really went there for the food, it was just a quiet neighborhood restaurant where we could talk and make our plans and it is always fun to go back.

I was sick as a dog for the MJN Memorial dives, so I apologize for spreading the crappy cold that I got at DEMA. I have not been scallop diving yet, just because I have been busy.

How does one say no to Bar-b-que? If I am in town, I will be there.

Since you asked, I do have a copy of Gary's self published "Exposé", but have not read it yet. I have seen his promotional material and I think I get the general idea. Maybe I am just an overly sensitive guy, but I get the impression it is all about slamming me and my partners?? If you have read the book then you should be telling me?

Then again, I am involved in TV and publishing?? I have chosen work that gives me a high profile as a diver. I am no shrinking violet. Should I expect that people are only going to say complementary things about me? I don't think so, and if I can't take the heat then I can just stay out of the kitchen.

Gary and I do have a long history, but there was never any kind of feud between us, and I have never had anything against him? We are not competitors, we are just guys who have done some diving together years ago. I admired him as a very talented wreck diver. He has his shortcomings, the same way we all do. We had a friendly conversation at a dive show a couple of months before his book came out, and he didn't mention anything about Shadow Divers or a book?

I was totally surprised to be the subject of anything coming from Gary, as we have never been that close, and we never worked together on the U-boat. Rob, Richie,or I were never interviewed for SDE? I have not seen Gary or spoken with him since the release of his book and we have not been diving together since about 1997.

Richie and I are working on another book about Titanic with author Brad Matsen. If it is successful, I wonder if somebody will have to write an exposé on that, too??? If I don't like it, I guess I can alway go back to commercial diving???

Cheers

Again, thanks for the nice feedback...

Hi John,

Welcome to Scubaboard! You have many loyal fans here!

I would like to ask you a few questions about Shadow Divers: The True Adventure of Two Americans Who Risked Everything to Solve One of the Last Mysteries of World War II , published in 2004.

It is my understanding that the copyright is owned by Robert Kurson, and the U-869 Partnership, comprised of Richie Kohler and you.

Robert Kurson is adamant that all of the facts and occurrences present in the book were confirmed by you, Richie, and the key people associated with the discovery, exploration, and identity confirmation of U-869.

Kurson admits to possibly making incidental errors such as a few minutes difference of decompression time, leading the reader to expect that there were no significant errors in names, dates, who did what, and so on.

How would you respond to the assertion that you and Richie took credit and fame for the essential work, discovery, and achievements of several unnamed researchers and divers?

:coffee:

Hi John,

How would you respond to the assertion that you and Richie took credit and fame for the essential work, discovery, and achievements of several unnamed researchers and divers?

:coffee:

That's a pretty general shotgun blast, why not pose a few specific examples?

I don't recall the book ever saying that John and Ritchie did it all on their own.

Hi John,

How would you respond to the assertion that you and Richie took credit and fame for the essential work, discovery, and achievements of several unnamed researchers and divers?

:coffee:

If it were me I'd quote one of the primary tenets of argumentation theory and say:

He/she who asserts must prove.

Its not the reponsibility of John to prove a negative.

Cheers,

Dave

Right...

"Dave, how do you respond to the assertions that you regularly beat your wife?"

John C. Welcome to the board and it is great to see you here. I thoroughly enjoyed Shadowdivers and your recent show on the Titannic/Britannic was great. I add to my thanks for all that you have done for the diving community.

Tonka, you totally blew it. Here you have the man himself, who you have "challenged" numerous times and you failed to "take the opportunity to challenge the veracity of 5 key scenarios portrayed in Shadow Divers." What happened? Here John offers to take you up on your challenge but you bailed??

I know that I for one was very much looking forward to these 5 scenarios and their rebuttal. Step up to the plate and name your 5 scenarios.
