Tobago Dives

Since I am from Trinidad & Tobago diving in Tobago is not only great but very convenient for me. I just wanted to start a thread to find out how many people have dove Tobago? want to dive Tobago? and their favourite dives in Tobago?

My favourite dives are Sisters and Karawak Reef

Tobago is in my Top 5 of the Mar Caribe.

Speyside, land based... that's my favorite.

Two buddies, myself and the wives are heading to Tobago for a week this winter. My wife just finished the classroom portion of her cert. Is open water referral possible for her checkout dives there or do you recommend completing them before we go. Too cold up here for her to get them done locally. She is not able (willing ) to do it in local quarry with a 7mil farmer jane setup.

We have a group scheduled to do the Wind Dancer in Tobago next spring. Am having a hard time finding reasonable airfare, and/or flights from Trinidad to Tobago once we get that far. Any suggestions? How are you getting there? We prefer to fly out of Birmingham, AL but Atlanta is an option.

Get as much diving in before you go. If you have to, get in the local pool and thrash around. Seriously.

On a scale of Caribbean 1-10, you have just walked into an interesting place.

On Tobago, where you should do an open water serries of your cert, that would be the South end, near the airport. Degree of difficulty: 3, Degree of Wonderment: 4

What you really go to Tobago to enjoy- The North End (Speyside and Charlottesville?) Degree of (Caribbean) Difficulty: 9. Degree of Amazement: 9 Small boats and swirling currents.

So, go to Tobago, dive the Pigeon Point dive ops. They are used to new divers. They have done many cruise ships and referrals- they're just perfect.

Lots of romantic stuff to do nearby and to drive to. Tour the island. Nice people!

What did Wind dancer come up with?

I prefer to fly out of Dub City, but that aint happening. Miami is the only gateway as far as I have ever found. You go to the end of the Caribbean and turn left. Tobago. Can't miss it.

(Whatever you do, your only contact with Trinidad should be transferring at the airport. Even if that costs more, do it that way.) The usual scheduled route has you touching down in 3-5 airports before you feel the cool breezes of Tobago.

If coming from America only direct routes to Trinidad are Washington, New York and Miami.
IF coming from Europe direct flights to Trinidad or Tobago are available from London.
If flying into Trinidad, there are shuttle flights that cost approx. $50 US Dollars and leave about once an hour until about 9 PM. If you are doing PADI ow cert. I know someone that is on the Pigeon Point side that can probably help you out.

Wind Dancer/Peter Hughes uses BWIA, which goes out of Miami and would mean a connection with a carrier change in Miami for us (not fun, and it's about $300 to get to Miami). We were told that you can only get on BWIA if you are flying from the US? (That part is second-hand information so may be missing something.)

I've found a website for Tobago Express that appears to have reasonable rates and times... if they're actually still around. They don't come up in any search engines, but then most of the smaller carriers usually don't.

I hope the diving there is great because it's sure difficult figuring out how to get there at a reasonable price, without stopping on every island between here and there!

It largely depends upon what you want.

The South end near the airport is fairly built up but still very Caribbean Casual! The diving ops are well set up and used to dealing with many day-at-a-time divers.

The North end is 1.5 hrs away by car and a world away in every other way. Laid back in oh so many ways... except for the diving- Es muy hondo, verdad.
