And when was the last issue of Skin Diver magazine published?

In addition to good diving, some of the reasons Cozumel is so popular is because it is close, relatively easy to get to, fairly inexpensive. It is the combination of these factors (and a few more like the food and people) that make Cozumel a great diving destination for Americans. If you only take into account the diving, I'll bet there are more than a few places with better diving. Personally, I liked California's Channel Islands as much if not more than Cozumel when comparing only the diving. Same goes for British Columbia.

But as you can see, my count down is for a trip to Cozumel, because when you take into account all the factors, but my non-diving wife's desire for a sunny vacation at Christmas, Cozumel is our best choice.

Well here's the thing - it may be one of the best in the Carribean, but when ranked with places in the whole world, I don't think it is nearly as high on the list as many places you are lucky enough to have closer to you.

FWIW, Jaques Cousteau rated Cozumel second in the world to Australia's GBR.

I've been to the GBR. I'll take Cozumel any day, even if they were equi-distant from where I am. Equal coral, better marine life, better visibility. Cozumel can't be beat.

And besides, what did he know, he was French. They gave us New Orleans, a city built below sea level.

I was at Cozumel a few days after Emily. Aside from not having any electricity the first day, it was still a great trip; vis was down a little but still great diving. Bad conditions clear out of the reefs at Cozumel quickly due to the currents.

Since you're coming from the other side of the world, I'd suggest if you do go to Cozumel to take some time to visit other places in Mexico while you're there, especially the Mayan city Chichen Itza. There are lots of people that would travel around the world just to see that. Mexico is quite a country and maybe this would make your trip a little more attractive than just diving.

I agree with the advice to invest in trip insurance for a trip of this size, but be sure to shop around for a policy, and READ THE FINE PRINT! These policies vary considerably, and some have very convenient loop-holes which make them next to worthless, IMHO. :11: As you can no doubt see, the opinions on Cozumel vs. Pacific diving range all over the map, as is to be expected. For what it's worth, I agree with those who advise you to invest in equipment now and use the marvelous diving opportunities that are so close to you. BUT, don't forget about Cozumel. It is definitely worth a visit, someday..... :hm:
