Thank god there are so many rich individuals willing to give their time, money and expertise to help other rich individuals. It's really heartwarming.
I know many members of the Explorers Club.

They are decidedly not rich.

Many of the expedition sponsors are.

Are you saying that you know that the sponsors didn’t give for other causes as well?

I read that they were trying to lobby the US government to give OUR money to help them. As most of their efforts seemed to be centered around having the Biden and Trudeau administrations to send resources.

A non-US flagged vessel that didn’t depart from a US port out in international waters.

Very interesting read, thank you
In the interests of fair and accurate reporting a quick google search has brought up numerous examples of USCG long range rescues

I would not want to set a precedent of the CG not attempting/performing rescues of adventurers who get in over their heads. Someday I might be the one who planned piss poorly.

Nor do I, but they make it sound like the Explorers Club is being altruistic, when in reality they were just looking after their own interests.

You don't see the Explorers Club lobbying the White House to get the USCG search longer then a boat of fisherman go missing actually in US waters.

In my opinion, “expeditions” like this should be required to carry insurance to reimburse taxpayers for costs incurred for the rescue/recovery - especially for ill-prepared, arrogant operations like OceanGate. These wealthy “adventurers” should be on the hook for their stupid choices.

I seem to recall a member of this board went missing in Mexico, and there was MUCH anger the USCG wasn't helping in the view of some here.

Now, there is anger they are helping too much.

Isn't it possible that the whole search was just an opportunity for them to train? At least USCG must have known about that loud bang 2 hours into the dive.
It's still weird to me and I don't get why there was search with planes and sonobuoys and stuff to begin with.

I read that they were trying to lobby the US government to give OUR money to help them.
Who cares. The money spend on that search was peanuts considering the budget for the US armed forces. Probably not even peanuts but a tiny part of half a peanut.

An extremely rich and entitled private society where they do extreme rich people stuff.
Next will be private rich people trips to the moon to bounce around like bunnies or kangaroos. What will those tragedies be like, and will they be calling up NASA to come rescue them?
So, rich privateers/profiteers run these trips, then when something goes wrong the taxpayer has to spend millions to bail them out or at least try?
If they’re that rich then they need to have their own personal rescue squad available and ready.
