Tip whomever is in charge, but make sure the other person is present when you do or at least let them all know you gave a tip. Boat crews are supposed to work together and share tips. However, if someone is going above and beyond, i'll slip them a bit extra to show my appreciation.

I dont mind tipping when it is deserved. Unfortunately, in todays society a tip is expected for little or no service. Im sorry but in my world you have to earn your money, I do.

Protocols vary from place to place. I have been on some boats where the DM gets absolutely no pay. With no tips, the DM goes home without a dime for a day's work.

In other places, DM's receive small pay with the expectation that they will get the rest in tips.

Finally, there are places where the DM's get a decent salary and tipping is discouraged.

It is a complex world, and figuring out what to do is a real challenge.

yea, it is a complex world. I really don't like investigating, asking questions about who gets what, who shares, who does not. I love my ten dollar a charter method because it keeps my life simple. If it is unecesary, oh well. And if it is a little low, oh well too. One of the main reasons I am on vacation is to not have to think about all the nuances of protocols, finances, interpersonal financial dynamics.

It depends on the service.

If I am on a boat, and the DM does NOTHING to help me... I mean NOTHING, like - I carry my own tanks to my spot. I walk to the back of the boat, unaided... upon my re-entry to the boat, the DM doesn't grab my camera from me, or help me to my seat... I don't think they've earned a tip.

I already paid for my spot on the boat... The tip is a way to say thanks for your hard work, or for going above and beyond.

Now if I had a DM give me a guided tour, which I don't do, but if I did... I would tip them for sure.

I do. Most of the DMs I know work for tips and I want to maintain a good relationship with the crew on the boats that I dive from.

Wow, I have been reading and reading and was hoping there was a simple answer. Thanks for all the advise... I always tip (it's just how I was brought up)...
I guess I'll just tip everyone! I'm diving in Cozumel and I'm pretty sure locals know American's tip (or most of us) If the DM or Capt feels wierd about me handing them some money then they can feel wierd. It's my vacation and I would feel wierd not tipping...

I own my own boat. I simply refuse to accept reservations from any person or group that is not American.
