Money, as well as absolute power, corrupts. Dive masters should never be tipped since they are in the business for the love of diving. Instructors, on the other hand, are in the business to make money and should always be tipped. If the instructor somehow kills your spouse or your children, I would reduce the tip somewhat.
Should you have an experience while diving with a divemaster that you feel calls for a tip, find the nearest instructor and have him/her handle the potentially sticky situation. You are diving for fun and should not have to worry about fiduciary matters.
I have been in MANY circumstances where people came up to me not knowing how to deal with this. I simply had them hand over whatever largesse they wished to share and I dealt with the situation. Any instructor will do the same for you.

Before anybody flames me, let me say that I do tip, and probably a lot more than you do. Nevertheless, Abysmal makes a pretty compelling argument. Tipping traditionally was reserved for workers in menial, low-paid jobs. Perhaps we Americans should take a hint from the rest of the world and stop the tipping. Maybe employers will respond by paying workers what they deserve.

O.K. I think you all are starting to change my mind. I think I will start tipping folks who have a high risk or service oriented job. How about my mail man, thats a rough job, or I know, the greater at Walmart for opening the door for me and handing me a shopping cart, they dont get paid to well. Police put their lives on the line for all of us, lets tip all of them, lets see there are 2000 cops in the city divided by x amount of law abiding citizens. Teachers pay sucks(good hours though) lets tip them. My garbage guy prevents disease by disposing of everyones trash. WHERE DOES IT ALL END!!!

Yes you should tip the mailman at least at Christmas. Yes you should definitely tip the public school teachers, I can assure you that ALL teachers will accept the tip if it is in the form of classroom supplies. You can also tip the cops if you like, they are constantly hounding me with tele-marketers asking for support for the police benevolent (or something) society.

Are you a PADI instructor by chance?

Careful in how you try to tip the cops, or you won't be scuba diving anytime soon! LOL!!:D :D

I am taking AOW next week....are tips expected on training dives when the boat is owned and operated by the dive shop you are taking the course from?

NO! You already paid for the course. You pay the shop and they pay the instructors.

dont hold your breath as that isnt going to happen anytime soon. then if it does happen are you willing to pay more for everyday items and services?

If anyone thinks that not tipping will increase the pay of DM or anyone else, they also hope some teeth will come out so the tooth fairy can give them money.

Do what you want. If you are so cheap as to not acknowledge another person helping you to have fun and keeping you safe, don't worry, we will talk about you behind your back. Most people can spare a couple of bucks and I am sure it is appreciated.

I have always looked upon a tip as a thank you with legs. If you don't have manners, you don't have manners.

Same thing for instructors, excluding the dive shop owner(s).
