I guess I'll just tip everyone! I'm diving in Cozumel and I'm pretty sure locals know American's tip (or most of us) If the DM or Capt feels wierd about me handing them some money then they can feel wierd. It's my vacation and I would feel wierd not tipping...
Thanks again for all the overwhelming advise.

There was a thread in the Cozumel forum that concluded that $5 a tank was good there.

That's time for the old tear the bill in half trick..

I don't know if you are saying something like that in jest, but if anyone did anything like that to me (or show me the tip first, etc.), I would feel really insulted. I would be as professional as possible and give the same excellent service as ever, but... well, you probably weren't looking to make a friend anyway.

As long as the service is good, I tip the boat crew at least $5 per tank (in the US, Caribbean and Mexico) on day trips and 10% on liveaboards. Haven't dived elsewhere yet. I usually give my tips to the Captain to split up. If someone were to give me extra special service, I would give them a tip in person in addition.

It was a joke .. it came from an old movie. I spent years in the service industry and know every single possible silly tip routine.. I generally use the chipped bill crack pass to tip.

I'm sorry but tipping is just another way to provolke people to beg for change. I was a divemaster for a long time and never worked for tips, encouraged it, or willingly accepted them. As an instructor I pay my dm's and discourage tipping. If your skills in diving or any other profession are substandard enough that you cant get paid an acceptable wage or none at all, you need to move on to something you are better at or improve your skills untill you are found to be a resource and not a burden. And if you dont like the pay being offered for this particular job, go work somewhere else that pays better, this goes for the tip jar located next to the cash register as you pay for your $6.00 cup of coffee.

Yes, but look at where you live. The typical dive master in cozumel makes 50 pecos a day + tips. Even then the tips are shared between the boat captain, the boat hand, and the dive master. 50 pecos is roughly $5 USD and isn't very much money. Those guys bust there *** and don't get paid very well. I'm always more then happy to tip for a good service provided.

Then get a better job that pays more

How easy it is to say something like this! If all such jobs are like this in your economic system, should you move to a country that has a different economic system?
