I agree with Mislav, two good buddy's are better than one, but finding the right trio can be challenging!

This really shouldn't be true, but I'm sure it is. Just a bit of training, or even just some experience diving in trios and a commitment to increased situational awareness, and you have a good team for basic recreational diving.

I'm lucky enough to dive within a community of people who are all trained this way, and we can put any three in the water and see it work well.

Pick a leader and go with whoever you pick. The next dive maybe someone else leads. Comunicate show both of the other divers the cool whatchmacallit.

Thanks for all the responses, guys. I'm glad so many people here have good things to say as, well, we've paid for the rental so we're going as a threesome regardless. :D

Unfortunately, only I have a light and it's a bulky hand-held one. Personally, I prefer not to dive with it, as I still feel a lot more comfortable with both hands free; one able to quickly grab my BC inflator/deflator, one to grab my mask. I'm still concerned about having it bumped off or having it flood, since I'm not good underwater without my nose plugged.

Still, I'm sure we'll be fine. I'm very comfortable at 35 feet and up, and there's plenty to see at those depths here it seems. One of my friends wants to go down to 70 ft to see some wolf-eels, but that's much farther than we've been before, we won't be with anyone with more than 12 dives (I have the most, as well as the only light/knife), and it just sounds like a bad idea. Also, my buddy I usually dive with gets lost in his own world a lot of the time (his personality) and I've lost him a number of times, only to not have him resurface after the 1-minute wait. As such, I'm not going deep without assurance of a second pair of hands and an extra reg. ;)

Completely by chance, I've been diving threesomes today with an English girl and a Thai girl on my first check dive here in Phuket.

Funny, I remembered this thread during that dive. :D

I dive as part of a threesome, sometimes. Whoever the leader is for the dive is responsible for eye-contact and OK sign with the other two at reasonable intervals throughout the dive. Depending on conditions, that can be a couple of times a minute, or once every couple minutes.

We are working off instinct at this point. Procedures will gel for us as we gain more experience. Considering doing fundies next year.

Did it help?

It's possible. You need to stick together as a team. Someone needs to be designated as the leader. Oh, and did I say?... Stick together. Be very clear what your lost-buddy procedure is going to be. Be very clear what your turn-around psi is going to be and be sure that you are close enough and paying enough attention to each other that the first one to hit the chosen psi doesn't have to fight to get everyone's attention.

I think CatFishBob has a great plan!
