Just a note to say hello to everyone here. Just did my nitrox training last month got the card already. Still am not sure about oxygen compatable air and if the same air as regular air. The gas blender I spoke with in FL did not give me enough info. Seems to me its the same stuff.

I live in NYC. My regular dive buddy moved to the FL keys. I will have to go visit him often. ;) Anyone interested in doing some diving in the NYC area occasionally?

el mar means the sea.

Howdy Elmar - glad you joined us! :crafty:

I was unclear on that, too, for a long time. If Partial Pressure Nitrox is just a blend of O2 and regular air, why can't I use the same tank with a regular air fill? Ah, but the tank must be kept super clean for when it is to receive the O2, less contamination invite combustion or explosion - both activities being strongly discouraged in a fill shack. :no To ensure that the tanks stay super clean, the air that goes in before the O2 must be even cleaner than the air used in regular air fills, and a more expensive sealant than silicone must be used on the threads. And hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will be along soon to clarify and correct what I just explained.

Be sure to check in on your local dive club forum: ScubaBoard.Com > Regional Travel & Dive Clubs> North America> United States> Wreck Valley and let me know if I can help you find your way around here. :) I hope I didn't use too many smilies here??

Hi, and welcome to the board.

To answer your question-
Normally with a partial fill pure O2 is put in the tank first. This means the tank needs to be very clean - without the hydrocarbons that can exist in ordinary scuba air. The normal air that is then added is also cleaned more than regular air fill clean. It passes through more filters. This removes the hydrocarbons that can cause problems - and hence the tank stays 'O2 Clean'.
All air is filtered before it's used for scuba - air used to mix with O2 is simply filtered better.
