Mom and I were diving at Crescent Bay a couple weeks ago. This little guy cruised past us at a depth of about 30 feet. I wanted to share because it's the first mola I've seen... anywhere... but also because I've read that molas grow to between 4 and 8 feet in "height". This guy was about 2 feet (just body, not including fins.)

Anyone with mola experience... was this a juvenile? If so, do they tend to stay in shallow water? I've been diving CB for years, first time I've seen one of these.

(oh, and the photo credit belongs to mom.)

Thanks!

The ones in California can get pretty big, but not eight feet. The large ones are usually found in Asia. I've seen dozens in the four foot range in SoCal.

that is one freaky looking fish.

For those who missed it, this is the video Mystaadaam was referring to. Warning; strong language NSFW and stupidity.
