Hi NJ Divegirl and 'friends',
please allow me to give you some info on diving in Thailand that is based on some experience. I have been living in Thailand for over 2 years now, and logged over 600 dives in that period. Haven't seen everything yet off course, mission impossible, but if I can give you some advice, in my opinion it comes down to this:
If you want to do some absolute great diving, the Similan Islands are about the best you will find in Thailand, possibly whole Asia! Incredible viz and enormous diversity in marine life. You can find everything here from small seahorses, ghostpipefish or harlekin shrimps to the gentle giants like manta's and whalesharks in a single dive!
However, if you prefer to stay on the mainland, which might be better if you plan to do your DM course, the Phuket area would be my choice. Good diving, and easy acces to more remote, but even better divesites as Hin Daeng or Hin Muang, Phi Phi islands,..(this is also the reason why I am currently staying here). Viz and diversity are far better than the eastcoast (Samui) or Pattaya.
I've been doing freelance work for most of the Phuket area diveoperators, so if you fancy some info on which one might be a good choice to do your DM, just let me know, ok!
Dive safe,
