My partner once found a steel strongbox wrapped in chains and padlocked shut. It had been tossed of a bridge. After opening it she found a plastic Gatorade bottle wrapped in tape. Inside the bottle was a nice dry bag of M & M's.

That is awesome! I think I'm going to have to do something like that but maybe with Skittles :D.

Anyway, a couple months ago in a lake in Maine (while snorkeling) I found 57 golf balls, two tiny turtles about 8" long, and a couple old bottles (not sure how old).

Old Chinese cash... not worth anything, but a nice souvenir.

Lots of stuff over time. One of the more interesting ones was an 8 ft. long, five compartmented side scan sonar fish leaning against a third reef ledge. One of my Ocean Engineering professors had lost and abandoned it. I found it a few days later after only three dives guess at the location within a 1/2 mile by 1/2 mile area. It was designed to automatically tow 15 ft. off the bottom, to explosively deploy a bunch of pingers and operated at a relatively high frequency for target definition. It cost $1,000,000. originally in the early 1970's but was totally of analog technology. So, it may have been a very, large and formerly expensive paperweight. As paper money sinks, I've found lots of that. In fact there are certain areas of reef which can be relied upon to trap it. I once found a new 70 hp outboard (traded for $$$ again in the college days) along with some gold jewelry from the same abandoned shipwreck over a 1/2 mile offshore decades back. Tons of anchors, my favorite during my impoverished college days were plow anchors, usually good for a $100. at Sailorman every time. There is a great deal to be found in the sea, start looking ...

I've found the usual dive gear (lights, spools, knives, snorkels and a GoPro)

But my favorite find was at a quarry (Mermett Springs in IL) where I was teaching OW. I was playing catch with my students (and a bowling ball) and the ball went off the platform. Going after the ball - I noticed a glint of metal in the silt near the School Bus. Thought it was a split ring from a slate and went to retrieve it. Turned out to be a gold wedding ring with an engraving. Gave it to Glenn - the quarry owner - and he got it back to the couple who had lost it two weeks earlier.

I found a really nice pocket knife by the cliff were people jump from. Then we found a pickup truck about 10 away.

Fish stringer, fish bucket, a VERY large anchor, part of a boat engine, fishing poles/reels, mask,a human femur( it was part of a skeleton from a medical school, had serial number on it that was traced back to them) , car battery, a wash machine(not sure how that got there), and a pole spear.
