I like an afternoon shore dive, then happy hour at BA. Maybe a night shore dive.
Hire a taxi for the afternoon to take you to the "other side" for turtle digging or just exploring.
Here something not mentioned yet, how about a massage.
Need dental work done, there are some good dentists around at very good prices.
If dancing is your thing there are some clubs for that as well.
The new CMC offers quite a few medical services, might be worth a check up.
I enjoy an early morning bike ride south of town, or an sunrise or sunset kayak paddle before/after diving.

Our plans go something like:
Get up, eat breakfast, 2-tank boat dive, eat lunch, lay on the beach, late afternoon shore dive. Twilight &/or night dive. Eat dinner. Sleep. Repeat.

Just a shout out re participating in strenuous sports (wind & kitesurfing) or getting a massage immediately after diving. These things are not recommended. Remember that you are offgassing and need to moderate what activities you think to do in light of that.

I'm usually with the crowd that has "eat, nap, read, take dip in pool, nap, read, dip in pool, eat, sleep" in no particular order. But on days I'm feeling ambitious, I will also include an afternoon trip to Xul Ha (by the Money Bar, not too far north of the Fiesta Americana) for some snorkeling, with an occasional break for Cerveca. On Sunday ONLY - No Cruise Ships in Town (this makes a REAL difference in prices at most of the stores), I schedule a trip into town for some shopping; I've made it sort of a personal tradition to always bring back some Talavera Pottery on every trip - I usually get it at Los Cinco Sol, on the main street about 4 blocks north of the Plaza, and I now have quite a collection for my dining room. A trip to the Museum is really worthwhile, and there is always the Tequila Tour on the Cross Island Road. I used to make an afternoon trip to Chankanaab Park, but they have so increased the Park Fee, and imposed a rule against snorkeling without a life vest (yeah, like I'm in any danger of sinking in Salt Water! - Hell, it's HARD WORK for me to swim down to see something unless I've got a few pounds of lead in my pockets without a vest), that I no longer think it's worthwhile. But, most days, my schedule begins with an early breakfast, dive, lunch, read & swim at the Pool, then Nap until Dinner, Dinner, wander downtown, around the Plaza, maybe a stop for breakfast pastries at the Zermat Bakery, maybe a beer or two at a bar if there's a game on TV that I'm interested in, then back to bed & start all over in the morning.

I love to beach comb. The east side is fablulous for this. One thing my wife and I love is going to Punta Sur. You drive to the east side and pay at the gate about 14$. Then drive along a preserve beach you cant walk on. You can stop at the crocodile preserve and walk the planks to the site tower. Very cool there. Then go to the light house and see the museum there. After that you take a cattle truck ride to the beach. So nice. Hammocks, snorkel, bring your own snack. Absolutely gorgeous there. We love this spot. It is in a little bay that is wonderful.
If you are going to beach comb I would advise wearing beach shoes. If you step on something infection will toast your holiday.
There is a Tequila factory that is very cool to see. Lots of history there. Close by this spot is San Gervasio ruins, kinda neat there too. A great walk in the jungle. Take good shoes and bug repellent.
In town on Sunday night the downtown square is a buzz of life. We like to go down there to have coffee after dinner and listen to the music.
My friends opened a bar called Love Cafe, it is so cool there. A five minute walk north of downtown square on the ocean road. It is beautifully spotted. A to die for spot to have a sunset too. The food is awesome. The house band is very busy on the island, they are called the Red Eye Band. A lot of good music comes from them. From rock to reggae to salsa. You'll likely see Christi from Blue xt sea there. They are her very good friends. They make me a very special alcohol free drink that I cant seem to mimick at home. Deliscious. O from the looks on everyones faces the alcohol drinks work too. lol.
There are many food places back of town to try out also. The ambience true Mexican. One of my favourite foods spot is El moro, with El Pique right up there too. Also Albinos for lunch, awesome spot.
Rent your car and just point is south, drive around the island fully without stopping then go back and visit places. That's what I was advised to do the first time. I did that and I made a lot of good friends in the mean time since.
As was stated. I have been back about six times a year since that first fateful drift. I hope you have a wonderful trip and meet all the great people of the island.

Dont know what time of year you are going but I would recommend that you talk to the folks at Blue Angel about taking a trip to the other side of the island to help with the turtle program. When we were there it was hatching season and the needed all the volunteer help they could get digging nests. It was a highlight on the trip.

Mike is right. Dive, drive to Coconuts, eat and read his big books. They even have lots of pictures so it is easier.....

OK- I'm gonna fall for this hook line and sinker....What books?? I've only been there once and the only thing I saw was a couple of sleeping dogs and the alligator. Didn't stay long because of all the mosquitos ( it was during the daytime so I can't imagine how bad they are when the sun sets). I might consider another trip to Coconuts if these "big picture books" are worth it..as long as they aren't in the bathroom..LOL
