near half moon lake
I grew up near the lake . thru the years i saw many divers out there. i always wondered if they could still see it.
have any of you guys tried to dive there and see it?
i dont even dive,, i joined this group, just to ask about the train. :D

Cool... where is half moon lake?

Bailey Michigan. the tracks couldve ran next to the lake, - where they are now - but they built the bridge OVER the lake so the train could stop there and they would cut out huge chunks of ice & load them on the train for people's "ice boxes". after the collapse, [or 2 ] they moved the tracks.
there is an old conversation on here about this [ thread,, great-lakes-wrecking-crew-,, halfmoon-lake-muskegon-county ]
I'm sure there is probably a way to link that to this,, However, I'm new to this & dont know how.

Would be a total of 1 1/2, half Moon Lakes? or 3? I'm confused..

Bob in CO

Well, if you moved them all together - but if you ever tried to move a lake once, you probably wouldn't again.

We need to get halfmoonlakegirl trained, certified, equipped, buddied, and outfitted with a camera so she can get us pictures of the train, if her HML ever clears up. ;)

When diving in Michigan you always have to confirm the lake and the county. We didn't seem to have much creativity when it came to naming lakes. Most lakes in Michigan have a story.....a roller coaster, cars, trains, etc. on the bottom. Few really do, which is disappointing.

i dont even now what a HML is. I'm new at this.

I only said there WAS a train down there, I didnt say it was a good dive. LOL
Before they put up all the new houses around the lake, you could find the old tracks, now you would just have to go by memory. from where the bridge was the train slid/settled to the north. it might even be completely covered in like 'muck' stuff. thats kind of an icky lake. the kind where the bottom is gooey.
people used to always dive there, we just always hung out there.
'they' always said if you flew over on a sunny day you could see the train outline, i dont know if thats true tho. :D

Ok, ok. :D The "your HMO" I was referencing is your Half Moon Lake, as compared to others by that name in that state.

Anyway...

That's a good enough reason to join us .. and good enough one to get scuba certified too :)
Welcome to the board halfmoonlakegirl .. I hope you stay around and fill us in on what it was like to grow up there
